I will be beyond pissed off if the offer is withdrawn and we end up with nothing/less, as has happened in the past. I would take 5%. We will never get 12% or whatever it is they want. By the time all the salary lost from strike days is added up, you’d need a giant pay increase to make it have been worth it.
Clown union led by publicly-hungry clown extraordinaire.

Our local branch are great. It's the one thing still keeping me here.

I don't disagree with your assessment of the leadership. And she's losing the backing of some branches. The options put on the table for them were poorly worded and we've long ago learned MAB not only doesn't work, but is detrimental to members' interests. It's been next to useless for universities on the semester-style structure for starters. Add to that the fact that employers appear unanimous in the stance of docking a whole day's pay for what they deem 'partial performance', and you might as well not bother with a boycott at all. All-out strike action is the only thing they'll listen to.

She's taken on the usual namby pamby approach that the management will simply sit out until she starts losing ballots. Which will happen.

As for 'Terf blocker', all I can say is I want a grown-up in charge.

It’s ridiculous. This is the worst of both worlds. It will financially cripple members and the unis will know exactly when the strike days are and will be able to plan around it and weather the storm. I didn’t think all out strike would be popular either but it has more chance of working than this. At least others are now starting to wake up to Grady’s incompetence which many of us have talked about for the past few years. She is obsessed with getting a media presence, ignoring the fact that the public don’t give a shit about academics or whether lectures are going ahead. The only people who do care are students and the university has their money already so won’t suffer much hardship.
i hope they accept somewhere near 5% and stop expecting people to bankrupt themselves for no return.

It isn’t 5% on top of a standard pay increase, it is? Isn’t it between 4 and 7% depending on your salary?

Does anyone know much they are actually asking for? I resigned from the union as I was so pissed off by their approach and so I’m not that up-to-date.

It really irritates me that they keep saying it's 'basically' 5% because what they mean is that no one on the lecturer scale would get the 7%, so if it would only affect PS staff it's so insignificant it doesn't count.

UCU want RPI + 2% or £4K (whichever is higher) for all staff, which is obviously never going to happen. I don't know what they would actually settle for.

GCandproud · 19/01/2023 14:55

There’s no way they will beat RPI. For me, an RPI plus 2% would amount to a pay rise of over 7,000 per annum. Yeah, would be lovely but I live in the real world…
i hope they settle for something more realistic or at least put the next offer to a membership vote.
