A place to talk about all disciplines and levels of science - what you're working on, what you're teaching, what you've read.

Non academics welcome.

‘World-first’ surgery saved baby boy with failing heart

Very promising news for stem cells

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/12/2022 13:27

Nice! And cost saving, which is a handy bonus.

I’m going out of my mind trying to explain the effect of b-lactams on the bacterial cell wall. Also going out of my mind trying to find a bacterial endotoxin to write about. My latest assignment is very bacteria-heavy. I don’t think bacteria are my calling.

Kucingsparkles · 30/12/2022 13:44

What do you need to know about beta-lactams, @CyanCrystalViolet? It's not my field but I can probably explain some of the biochemistry.

As for bacterial toxins, how about these? DH used to work on this.

Thanks again @Kucingsparkles, and I will look at those toxins tomorrow when I come to tackle that question 😵‍💫 off to bed to have nightmares about peptide cross-links.

You're very welcome @CyanCrystalViolet!

In 30 years things have changed from labs discriminating against women when allocating facilities and keeping it a big secret, to labs still doing exactly the same thing but quantifying and announcing that discrimination.

Isn't progress marvellous?

Wow. And yet I’m not surprised!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/02/2023 21:42

Unusually for New Scientist, this doesn't seem to be paywalled.

The surprise at tool use being found in combination with really good teeth is a little odd, but some fascinating finds.

I would never have guessed they were tools! Shame there’s no picture of the teeth.

CyanCrystalViolet · 10/02/2023 07:22

What are people’s takes on the correlation between lead exposure and violent crime? I’m researching it at the moment as part of a particularly wretched assignment. Not really sure what to make of it.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/02/2023 12:15

This has a bit more detail, including a tooth pic.

Environmental lead and crime seemed a plausible (indirect) correlation when I encountered the theory. Hard to prove though, and what evidence I saw was from a fairly narrow data set. And it was a while ago - so an updated graph showing more of the trend since the ban - and in a wider range of countries - might amend my views.

😃 I love that there are still species to discover (Darwin had it easy!)

The article is just less specific than it could be isn't it as marsupials are mammals.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/08/2023 23:06

Yes, they're a subset of mammals - but it would clearer that they're properly native species if the article said marsupial because most people's brains go to placental mammal first if it's not specified.

Ahh yes I didn't think of the native/non native associations & work under the assumption that journalists wreck science reporting

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/08/2023 23:54

Oh yes - always assume it's been totally mangled in the reporting.
