Tips switching to teaching from other profession
Arcadia · 27/10/2022 09:26
Hi I'm a Solicitor and am looking at applying for a 0.10 FTE online teaching role alongside my existing PT job.
It looks like it's an application form as opposed to a CV.
I have some transferable skills but no adult teaching experience other than some fairly informal TEFL nearly 30 years ago!
No idea whether I'll get the job but any advice when applying?
Thanks in advance.

Any experience delivering training, mentoring, coaching?
supporting colleagues, pastoral type care at all - would have some relevance.
if teaching materials are prepared for you then it’s more of a focus upon student support, inclusivity, communication and use of online tools I’d imagine.

@AlwaysColdHands I was thinking I can say about mentoring/coaching junior colleagues, explaining legal concepts and processes to my clients, and conducting court hearings and meetings online and advocacy. But should I also say I realise that it's slightly different to teaching? Is it better to show that I'm aware of the differences, or better not to highlight it?

There is a point on the job specification about inclusivity, is that dealing with language issues/cultural issues/different learning styles, barriers to learning etc? I've dealt with clients with different disabilities, all different cultures and religions, offenders etc. will that be relevant?

It's not so much dealing with differences like the ones you describe, OP, more starting from the bottom up with inclusive design at the core of your work. You might find it helpful to look at the Advance HE website.

@Arcadia it depends what type of role. For example, if you’re an Open University tutor online then you don’t prepare teaching and learning material, you support students with their studies of the material, run tutorials focused on assignments, mark these. so it sounds to me as though you do have relevant skills for this type of role.
Designing curriculum and delivery is a different kettle of fish.
I wouldn’t emphasise lack of direct teaching skills too much. The institution/ organisation may offer staff without a teaching qualification the opportunity to enrol on this (it may be a condition) e.g. PG Cert so you could express your willingness to do this or similar

@AlwaysColdHands it's the first one, it's for OU. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for this, I've had a look at this but doesn't make much sense to me, might have to look up the terms they refer to!
