"Informal discussion" prior to interview?

I have been invited to interview at a university I don't know well. Would you recommend taking up the offer of an informal chat, or should I have done that prior to applying? I would like to make sure my presentation hits the spot regarding the department's priorities etc. but I don't have anyone on the inside. The contact suggested is the HoD so don't want to accidentally commit a faux pas. It's quite a senior post if that makes a difference. If nothing else, it perhaps suggests that I am perhaps aiming too high if I can't answer this simple question myself!

I would for sure. I did this prior to the interview for my current job and the HOD showed me round and we chatted.

Always have the informal chat, it makes a big difference if they like you pre interview and you look keen

Yes go ahead and do it. I found it awkward but then realised I was being told things in the conversations that helped in the interview. One interviewer was the head of dept and quite intimidating so I was glad to not be meeting him first time in the interview. I got the job and I do think it was from that added familiarity. Good luck!

I have just organised a call for next week. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Always worth doing this. I've been involved in recruitment from the other side and I'm always struck by the fact that a) not many take up the offer of a chat and b) the ones who do tend to be stronger.

You've very little to lose and an awful lot to gain!
