What to do post-PhD

I am close to submitting and looking to the future. It seems obvious that I look for academic positions (post-doc/research associate or lecturer) but I'm not sure I want to given the state of things currently in academia.
What other options do I have with (hopefully) a PhD in Psychology (broad I know but don't want to be too outing)? I've a fair bit of teaching experience behind me and work with clinical populations.

Thanks Smile

there are lots of options with a psychology PhD.

Can you do coding / data analysis / R? If you can do & enjoy this, look at things like data science which can pay very well for people who can organise data & do basic stats.

Do you like writing / organizing? Look at things like science funding agencies & journals who hire PhDs to oversee the grant-giving process etc.

If you want to work with clinical populations, it is possible to do a Clinical Doctorate (on top of your PhD) or look for charities etc that support the population you know about.

Further afield, advertising & tech companies often hire psychology PhDs to understand people & how they work. So do many of the big management consultancies etc.

If you aren't on twitter, join and start following all the psychology researchers you've ever heard of. you'll start hearing about jobs etc.

Good question. I hear Aldi is recruiting!

I wish I was kidding. The state of academia is dire. It is still possible to get a post doc and then a permanent position but the competition is fierce. I’m not saying “don’t even try”, certainly if that’s what you want then do try. But perhaps also consider options outside of academia. Apparently it’s possible to leave academia and the people who do are often happier and better paid😅

I recommend speaking to your supervisor and other people in your department, they will know you best and will be able to advise. Good luck!
