Is there a stage during book writing when it feels like it will never be finished?

If so, I think I'm there! Started writing last summer, downed tools most of the Autumn due to writing journal papers and teaching etc (and isolating kids etc) and then picked it up again around May this year. I now have a complete first draft but it still feels quite rough. Everyday it feels as though I inch forward just a little bit but hardly make progress at all, despite what feels like enormous effort. I am feeling quite panic-y now. My publisher is being good but it is late and I just can't see the end! Anyone got any words or wisdom? Is this a normal stage of the process? It's a long time since I wrote anything this long!

I've only written one book but I had this stage and so has everyone I know.

Can you send the manuscript to someone to read? Or chapters of it? That's what I always do when I hit a bump.

That is reassuring @sarahandquack

I think for now I just want to get it into a finished state. I just can't work out how much longer it is going to take and what to say to my publisher - some days I think I'm reasonably close and others I feel like suggesting it will be 2023!!!
