Mitigation measures for parents in lockdown?

Hello All,

I’m just wondering if your universities have offered any mitigation measures for academics who are having to homeschool children while simultaneously teaching full time?

I don’t think we’re allowed to go on furlough (certainly hasn’t been offered) but I’d like to know if anyone has been given any other assistance/allowances from employers/HoDs. Marking extensions? Reduced teaching loads? Less admin? All we seem to have been given so far is pressure to take up “critical worker” places!

I’d like to suggest some possible support mechanisms to my HoD, but it would be great to get an idea of what other places are doing first. Thanks.

Our school is full with children whose parents are doctors, nurses, supermarket staff etc. I can work at home, even though it’s massively stressful. So I feel I should

Exactly - school is already full of the children of more important key workers!

We’ve now been told we have to take unpaid or annual leave if we can’t manage the workload plus homeschooling. I’m assuming they’re counting on us not all actually doing this - or how will the students be taught?!

We've been managing (both of us work p/t and DCs have p/t school) by using the emergency family leave and juggling, so far, we couldn't have both of us home, both working, and both DCs doing any learning (which to some extent was OK in Lockdown 1 because not much was expected so one of us would do half a day of child wrangling and vague teaching and then we'd give them a screen each). But now one of them has a full timetable and the other one has at least one live lesson a day that they are expected to be on.

The emergency family leave will run out and then we'll be on AL. We are better than some because this time we don't have both DCs home full time (complicated set of circumstances relating to one DC and to DH job). My friend took the whole of last week as AL to get her DCs caught up on school work (her DH is working out of the house but the DCs' school is full).

We are STILL being told we CAN take furlough but hopefully we won't get to that point. But if it's up to Easter - and if any of us have to self isolate - it could get to that.

what if you are professional services in a veterinary school? Trying to determine how long I would be WFH for.

worstofbothworlds · 28/01/2021 10:12

I'm not quite sure what you mean @Iwillneverbesatisfied

I know students are allowed to go back to veterinary studies which means academic staff could be there but what if you are non academic in an essential subject (vet school in my case)?
I have no idea if I'd be expected in the office or not after Easter (if not before). Trying to determine what other universities are doing.

Trying to determine what other universities are doing.

Staff who can work from home still work from home. Regardless of which school or department they are in.

I'm afraid I've no idea - I do have a friend who's PS in a medical school and she's WFH but her DCs are in school on days when her front line worker husband is sleeping off a night shift; I think they are in school as his kids not because of her employment, though.
