Interview questions?

I have an interview for a teaching post this week. It’s my first one. Can anybody advise the kind of questions that may come up? Are interviews for academic roles generally competency based? Is the STAR approach likely to be applicable?

Thank you!

Examples of good lesson you've witnessed
Safeguarding.. do you know what to do/say if confided in?
Why teaching?
If secondary why subject?
Tes will have list of possible questions. Make sure you have researched the school fully

It's for a university post, right? I'm slightly confused by the first answer.

I've never even heard of the STAR approach and I've sat on interview panels for academic posts. Have they asked you to prepare a presentation? They'll generally ask an initial set of questions based on that.

I suspect there will be some questions about adapting to current teaching scenarios (e.g. teaching f2f with masks and social distancing and online) and how you engage students in this situation.
If you haven't done any online teaching, I would mug up on this.

You may be asked to explain your teaching philosophy or about your knowledge of particular pedagogies (e.g. problem-based learning, or peer assessment, etc). How is your teaching inclusive / diverse, etc? How would you deal with a student who is struggling with (e.g.) mental health problems.

Don't underestimate the collegiality question. We always have one of these questions: they're designed to ascertain whether the applicant in a selfish individualist of the kind so common in academia or whether they will pull their weight.

Just to explain about not underestimating the collegiality question: we have frequently ruled out otherwise strong candidates solely on the basis of the response they gave to that question.

Oh sorry, think I got the wrong end of the stick

Thank you for the responses! So helpful. Yes, sorry it is an academic post. I was trying to be vague, so that’ll learn me!

I guess the kind of things I should be saying about online teaching is encouraging student engagement and being interactive. Am I along the right lines?

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years time"

You could talk about your experience of online teaching or conference presentation if you don't have any teaching experience online.
I don't know about the STAR approach, sorry.
Even if you are going into a just-teaching post, they may ask about your research, and you may be giving a presentation.
They may ask about how you see yourself keeping up with research if you are in a just-teaching role - it's not a trick question. They may want you to, for example, supervise undergrad and Masters projects.

My main experience of a lecturer interview was to deliver a little talk on one of my projects. Obviously they were assessing public speaking ability. Friends tell me that Lecturer jobs nowadays are all about how many grants are you going to get, what are your empire building plans. But if this is a mostly teaching job, then they will want to know about pastoral care, administration, knowledge of the subject area, and basics like how soon can you start.

I had an academic interview recently where I realised belatedly that I was really supposed to 'sell' myself, ticking essential box criteria, as answer to each question. I won't get that job...

I got asked things about how the university can improve NSS scores and how I would deal with teaching students of mixed abilities.

Is this for teaching only or a teaching and research post? I found that there was relatively little focus on teaching in my interviews but as i was asked to give a presentation, they would be able to get an idea of my classroom style.

They might ask what new modules you could develop. (Recent interview experience!)
