Advice about moving to the tech industry

Not entirely sure if this is the right forum to ask this question but here goes. I am a postdoc in Computing and have been in my position for a few years. After grappling with the decision about being an academic vs working for a tech company I have finally decided on the latter. Has anyone made this jump and can give me some advice on the job hunt process? My main constraint is that I want to be able to work flexibly since I am the lead parent in the house and my SO works very long hours. I have worked mainly from home for the duration of my current position.

I feel like gunning for the big tech companies may not be a good idea -- from the few tech interviews I have done I felt like all the perks were aligned more towards keeping people working longer in the office rather than encouraging remote/part time work. What is the best way to get a feel for the tech industry in London? Would going to meet ups help? Thanks!

I think you just have to try.
DH works flexitime as an app developer, for revolving (but often repeat!) employers. He gets most his jobs thru word of mouth.

my DH did this. postdoc -> consultant in a small startup.

all his jobs are word of mouth & contacts. Meetups can be very good for getting started and he still goes to several. Also Linked-in.

there are also lots of freelance jobs on sites like O-desk which can lead to something more permanent and that can give you good flexibility.

@Heath3, I am in the same shoes. I have been a post-doc in life sciences for the last 5 years. I am having lots of trouble getting interviews with a consulting firm and of course, I don't network so I have no contacts to the network. I am at such wit's end. Crying mostly on my own becuase don't want to worry my children and husband unnecessarily. Have my contract until 2020 but given I am hardly at work they might chuck me out soon.
