Applying for funding while a PhD student

Wonder if anyone can give me any advice on this. There is research funding available within an area and location that my thesis focuses on. Applications are due end of this year with further applications to be done next year if the first round is successful. Funding to be given around 2020 which would be around the time my PhD should be finished, ie this could be the perfect post-doc opportunity.

I have asked my main supervisor but it seems she and another prof are already applying for this funding but with a slightly different research angle. I do know someone else I might be able to ask as I know there obviously needs to be a member of staff from a university as a main applicant.

As mentioned above, the funding both fits the location and the topic of my research so I am really keen to see if I can apply for it.

How would I go about this? Any advice?

read the criteria. most funding bodies need you to have a permanent position at a university to be able to apply. In that case, you could offer to help your supervisor write her application & make sure you are the named postdoc in the grant. you won't necessarily get (much) CV credit for the grant but it can get you a job.

Some funders will let you apply for their research funds as a fellowship (ie you include your own salary in the grant app so you will be paid). but those tend to be VERY competitive and your supervisor would not be going for one.
