Lecturer interview, what may I be asked

I have a lectureship interview in sciences at a Russell Group university.

I have had lectureship interview before but it was some years ago and I was an external candidate and it was clear they had an internal lined up so I was not asked proper questions and the chair of the committee was not interested in my responses. I think it's a bad example to base experience on so I feel I am going in for first time.

I have already given presentation on research and teaching to the department as part of shortlisting process. For this I have articulated how I fit into department, my experience, and my profile. There were questions afterwards which were quite standardized and like interview questions such as can you give me an example of dealing with conflict in the classroom?.

Since I have already been asked questions like this which I think are like questions normally asked at interview, what additional questions might I expect in the interview itself please?

The interview is on Wednesday which does not allow much time for preparation Sad

I am happy for any guidance anyone may be able to give.

questions tend to be closely based on the person spec. So

  • what can you teach
  • how would you teach X?
  • what are your research plans?
  • what grants would you apply for?
  • what admin roles have you had?
  • how would you like to contribute to Y?
  • who would you collaborate with?
  • how does your research / teaching fit with our strategic direction?

I doubt there will be oddball questions, probably just more of the same. you could look up statements on the strategic direction of the university & dept if you want to get ideas for the last one.

Probably something about the REF. Have you got 4 submitable outputs? If not what are your plans to get there (i.e. publication strategy). Have you got an impact case study to contribute?
Science you write. Make sure you have a 5 year grants strategy, including first grant if applicable. Collaborations for grant also (Coi, PI, industrial partners). Make sure you have a good read on the EPSRC or BBSRC websites for eligibility at least.
At a RG uni, they only care about research income (80%). There is money from the REF as well, so good papers (3/4) do matter a bit, maybe 20%.
Conversely, nobody cares about teaching, unless someone is truely disastrous. For teaching related questions, it's probably a good idea to try to convey that you can teach efficiently (perhaps using classic textbooks as much as possible), and in a way that appeals to the students (keywords here: TEF and especially NSS), but that you are not especially passionate about it: it's research (the kind that brings income) that matters the most to you.
This being said, you have to be a bit subtle about it and be ready to adapt to the panel.
Read as many recent issues of the THE as possible, invaluable to help show you already are a permanent academic in all but contract.

Thank you for the comments.

Unfortunately I was not offered the job but it has been useful to go through the experience. I have got another interview in later June at a slightly worse university but a job is a job right now.

Any more idea for interview questions I am very happy to receive Smile
