using google drive for student feedback?

does anyone use google docs/drive for student feedback? One of my post-grads has sent me a link to her doc on google and wants me to put my comments in there rather than as I did before with a word doc - I'm open to this suggestion, I know my students all now tend to work on-screen and don't have the same paper fixation I have (being old).

I'm just not sure what the implications are as i'm not very up to date with using google.
Am I right in thinking that as soon as I insert a comment she'll be able to see it? (not sure I'm ok with this 'live' commenting, I like to double-check my comments when I'm finished to ensure consistency and also that my tone is right overall - the right balance between harsh and encouraging).
Also, if I 'sign in' to Google to make these comments does that have privacy implications - can she then see more of my online presence than is appropriate?
Any other thoughts/concerns?
I think I would be a lot happier if I could download a version and comment then upload it again once I'm happy all my comments are suitable for sharing.

I wouldn't do this for all the reasons you mention- comments sometimes come out a bit harsh, need to review and re-balance them at the end, and fundamentally you are doing the work here and it should be in a medium that suits you! I don't review papers online through pdf formats as I find it hard work, if they want a review, it has to be in a written Word format that makes it easy for me to put down my thoughts.

You also need a copy, just in case for the future. I'd ask her to send as a Word/pdf and review in the way most suitable for you (your eyes, your health, your working style). The comments aren't there for her to paste right in!

I sometimes edit shared documents on DropBox but I find it a pain, slow and just not user-friendly. I wouldn't edit a long document on there.

Perhaps I'm boring sticking to Word/track changes/comments though!

I also print out anything over about 4 pages, as I can't read for long periods online, waste of paper that it is.

Thanks. I've downloaded a version as a word doc and told her that i'll email it back.
I also wasn't happy that she might make edits while i was reading so have told her that's why.
Glad it's not just me. I have become aware this year particularly that my students (I guess average age 22ish) are very anti-paper in a way that hasn't been as pronounced before and when they use environmental arguments I have sympathy for their point of view.

There isn't really an environmental argument for using google docs rather than emailing a word document using track changes. So there's no need to feel guilty!

My alarm bell rings that you need to have a copy of what you sent them, somewhere, not just them having a copy on their GoogleDrive.

I am a convert to paper-minimum ways of working, but you need to have a copy yourself of what you did/wrote. In your sent folder should be fine, but still something.
