Write-up club?

This is a very sorry post motivated mostly by my week of procrastination which means that January will go by without the much needed paper submissions i had planned for our upcoming mock-REF (and the frant applications i am meant to write).

I have a glute of manuscripts in need of completion, and several are rotting away due to lack of input (my fault - too little time and i bute more than i can chew)

Fancy joining me in a quest for more effective writing?

My goals for this first semester:
2 collaborative papers submitted, and sheperding three or four papers from two different phd students.
Plus starting the "BIG one" - manuscript for my giant cohort study. Still pondering what to do for that one.

What about you? What are your goals?

yes - science. Rebuttal is fairly common in my field. This is the best part of being an editor - reading the responses to reviewers (and editors) from certain author - an education!

DH and DD's are away visiting family until Monday and I have no teaching for a week.

I need to push on with drafting the article, but I also need to develop a grant application to the AHRC for impact work.

My head is spinning already.

goingpearshaped · 09/02/2017 16:11

I know what you mean toast, the demands are crazy. Half term is not going to help me either as I am doing bits of childcare. Grant writing is sllooooow but some progress today.

I am making progress with another paper but getting caught up with admin (Athena Swan anyone?) and other bits.

Keep going fellow writers.

Sorry to hear about the rebuttal marasme.

bigkidsdidit · 09/02/2017 18:32

I have half term booked to work all week while DH is off with the kids. I CANNOT WAIT. I'm going to stroll home when the work is done, rather than losing concentration with one eye on the clock, needing to sprint out of the door at 2pm.

purplepandas · 09/02/2017 18:56

I so get that bigkids, sounds like you will be v productive! We are tagging so I get the morning to work and DH the pm. I am starting early!!!

iveburntthetoast · 09/02/2017 20:31

im in Scotland & the kids only get a long weekend off. No other time off between January and Easter. Poor things are knackered by the end of March.

bigkidsdidit · 09/02/2017 20:36

Oh I'm Scotland too. We have tomorrow lunchtime - a week Tuesday off!

MarasmeAbsolu · 09/02/2017 21:20

OK - so a little recap before half-term. I managed to sling two drafts to the collab teams, and the third one will go very soon. Not much luck with the big paper planning, and having to deal with two rejections (the one above, and another, older one, I forgot about)

What about you? updates?

I am on it! Some grant stuff done earlier but tomorrow is the day.

Paper is in progress...... I am also waiting on others but we should send the various bits by 27th Feb.

iveburntthetoast · 11/02/2017 12:44

I've just managed a productive two hours of writing in Caffè Nero. It's hard to judge how far I am from completing. I need to do a lot of stitching different sections together.

anonymice · 13/02/2017 13:34

This is all good stuff purple and toast. Despite getting up at 4am four days last week (DD" teething) I have sorted some of the book proposal and written 2000 words of the co-authored paper. I am exhausted now though and have student essays in next week so they are coming to my consultation hours when normally they don't and I write Grin

bigkidsdidit · 14/02/2017 16:25

I have spent an entire day (7-4) working on paper 1. In 25 minute blocks with 5 minute breaks. Seems it's still progressing at a snails pace (I'm having to reanalyse and do new stats on big bits) but at least I got some time on it! Another day set aside on Thursday.

MarasmeAbsolu · 14/02/2017 19:46

impressive - there is something to be said for luxurious days with unbroken focus!

purplepandas · 22/02/2017 18:39

Sorry for absence, Grant was submitted yesterday. Paper is still outstanding but I have some travel time tomorrow and Friday. I am hopeful as not too much to do on that one. Another one tells a different story!

bigkidsdidit · 23/02/2017 19:30

My paper 1 (draft 7) was sent to other authors today.

Working on other things next week then paper 2 starts up...

purplepandas · 23/02/2017 22:36

Go bigkids. It is never-ending isn't it! Just finished working on easier to finish paper but more to do.

anonymice · 24/02/2017 11:06

co-authored paper almost finished. Book proposal taking forever because one other author has 'not got time' to write narrative CVs...I am sure this is so, but it's quite frustrating....My own paper is stuck at 3000 words but I shall plough on in between marking and trying to sort some work for next year....

Deianira · 03/03/2017 12:59

No progress here yet - this semester has been far worse than I anticipated. We break for Easter in another few weeks, and so I'm trying to make sure that before then I'm ready with plans, reading etc. so that I can do some serious uninterrupted writing over the break. Wish me luck!

Congratulations to all those who've met or made progress towards their goals so far!

bigkidsdidit · 03/03/2017 18:28

I haven't done anything this week. Well, I've done lots, but you know what I mean Grin

iveburntthetoast · 05/03/2017 14:16

Well, there's been no research done lately. My work moved the promotion process forward from May to February without any warning. And whereas we had 2 months to submit, we now have only a month. At one of the busiest times of the semester Angry It involves writing a 6 page, single spaced narrative of how great I am. Not what I was expecting to have to do amongst everything else. I've had to ignore marking and everything else to get it done.

bigkidsdidit · 31/03/2017 18:12

By Easter I said I would send my big paper off to all co authors, do most of the data analysis for paper 2, and map out the direction of my first senior paper.

I HAVE DONE 1 AND 3!!!

Happy Easter Wine

iveburntthetoast · 01/04/2017 21:51

I taught my last class for 5 months yesterday Grin

Still got loads of marking to do, but I'm finally starting to look at the article I'm writing again.
