Etiquette talking to publishers

The editorial board on the series I'm looking at (possibly) approaching with a proposal includes someone I know, who supervised me early in my thesis and who has been a distant-ish mentor (distant on my side: I rarely contact her but she is always generous when I do).

I have done the usual stuff of looking at what else they've published, first off. But would it be a breach of etiquette to email this person first, informally, with my proposal, asking her whether she thinks it'd be of interest? And is it a potentially useful thing to do, do you think?

Thanks!

Absolutely do that. It's what people who are on editorial boards expect, and are pleased to do.

Thanks very much - glad to know!

Part of the role of being on an advisory board for a journal or book series is looking out for good work to publish. So go for it!
