What's the script with teaching jobs at Oxbridge colleges paying crap money?

Exeter college.

There have been a few kicking about. Always very few hours and always paying about 5k a year.

Who is willing/able to uproot their life to one of the UK's most expensive cities? Who actually takes them or even applies for them? Or am I missing something obvious?

It's the kind of job that attracts people who can work for the joy of teaching clever students in a lovely environment and have other revenue streams to pay the bills.

Many years in Oxbridge and I have pretty much never met somebody who taught for joy and had other income. I have known a few women who taught part-time to fit around children and top up the family income but most people taking these posts are in the early stages of trying to build an academic career.

(Note, I haven't met getahaircurl!)

DH does some teaching at Oxford, to post grads. It takes up limited time, and looks good on his CV. His present job even lets him take paid leave to do it.
There are a number of people I know who do a bit of teaching as part of a portfolio of things. Admittedly teaching for the odd week is far more convenient that a few hours each week for a term or two (and is why DH gave up teaching at another University when he no longer needed the income).

Yes, but is that 'does some teaching' or is it one of the jobs the OP is referring to?

eso you might have Smile.

What I mean is I don't advertise the fact that I have another income stream.

I'm sure many colleagues think I work part time to fit in with my family.

"...the joy of teaching..."

Hahahahahahahaha.

TBH I do enjoy it.

I wouldn't do it otherwise. But then again, I don't have to worry about too much admin, I have few departmental responsibilities etc.

My day to day experience is a million miles from my colleagues who are either trying to build up an academic career or who are at the sharp end of attracting endless funding.

I do enjoy teaching too. It's the accompanying exam-marking that I don't like ...
