Universities themselves in debt

A (prestigious) colleague got poached by another Uni.
Gossip I heard is that Poaching-Uni is massively in debt even by English Uni standards. Something like they owe 9x as much as they are getting from tuition fee income.

I found this handy guide to some Uni debts.

What do you reckon, how much debt is it reasonable for a Uni to carry, does it mean the screws will get turned tighter on us plebs to produce or be cut ?

(come on gals/guys, we wanted this topic, let's keep it active)

Continuing the theme of tightening down screws, a 3-line-whip has been called at my institution, including summons of lowly RAs & PhD students. About REF 2020.

How are the panic stations doing where you are?

I expect there will be one or two institutions panicking about the economic downturn in China.
I'm no longer in academia though so blissfully ignorant about the chaos of REF submissions.

I'm not paying much attention to REF 2020. Still recovering from the last one ...

I did think about it last time, but came to the conclusion that I'm doing all I can already.
