Why are we not more surprised (content warning: discusses abuse)

NHS trusts reportedly recorded more than 35,000 cases of rape and sexual misbehaviour in 5 years.

The majority of incidents (58 per cent) involved patients abusing staff, the investigation found. Patients abusing other patients was the next most common type of incident (20 per cent) yet fewer than one in 10 NHS trusts had a dedicated policy to deal with sexual assault and harassment.

More than 4,000 NHS staff were accused of rape, sexual assault, harassment, stalking, or abusive remarks towards other staff or patients in 2017-22 - but only 576 have faced disciplinary action.

Why is there no independent public enquiry into this? Why are people not more outraged?

It's a disgrace but sadly I'm not in the slightest bit suprised. Rape is pretty much legal in the UK in 2023.

Do you not think a TW is appropriate?

Curiouscat101 · 13/07/2023 21:03

I think even by the lack of responses on here that the general public seem to turn a blind eye to these things.

Yet here we are this week focusing on one individual in the media who, to date, has been found to have done nothing illegal.

call the NHS and never dare go to their hospitals

Curiouscat101 · 13/07/2023 21:10

It’s a vital emergency service I don’t think we can exactly do without it but clearly there are big issues here.

Sorry didn't mean to be rude. I wouldnt choose to read a thread discussing this and just get fed up regularly being caught by it.
Thank you, have a nice day 💕

For context, there are over 1.2 million NHS staff (whole time equivalents).

stargirl1701 · 13/07/2023 21:28

Does it not just reflect society? That's the reality of the UK. Why are you surprised?

Maddy70 · 13/07/2023 22:29

When you consider how many people are employed by the NHS and how many use the NHS. It's a very very tiny %. While even a slight % obviously is awful it's important to keep perspective

Curiouscat101 · 13/07/2023 23:03

Okay but there is 21000 people employed by the bbc, yet we are focusing on one individual.

There is 7000 people employed by itv yet we are focusing on one person.

what’s the difference?

Met police has 44000 people and yet there were multiple threads last year on a handful of police.
