Trigger warning: confusing situation….possible miscarriage?

I went to have my coil removed a couple of weeks ago as it was causing side effects and they couldn’t find it, so I was sent to have it removed by ultrasound.

The doctor managed to remove it, guided by ultrasound, but said that sadly they could also see on the ultrasound that I had been pregnant but it was non-viable. The pregnancy was measuring 9 weeks 5 days. Pregnancy test was negative but they said on balance they still thought I was miscarrying from the scan image. I was referred for medical management (pill to cause contractions).

However the following morning I started bleeding very heavily with large clots, I went to the hospital and they scanned me again and said they couldn’t see anything of note on the scan. They thought the other doctor had misinterpreted the scan and I hadn’t been pregnant, but couldn’t really give me an answer as to what else it could have been that the doctor had seen. They did a blood pregnancy test which was also negative and discharged me. The bleeding settled down.

Now a week later I started bleeding very heavily again and passing what looks like clots/tissue (I do have a photo of this which I can post if helpful but don’t want to be TMI).

I’m not feeling particularly well from bleeding so heavily and I’m struggling to make sense of everything that’s happened.

any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

If you had a miscarriage and the baby stopped growing, you'd still have HCG in your blood for a while after so if the blood test showed 0 HCG and the urine test was negative too id say it's very unlikely you were pregnant

But also not sure how they can misinterpret an almost 10 week foetus on a scan!

You must be feeling a bit all over the place and confused :( hope you're okay

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 14:24

This was what I thought too, but the doctor that told me I was pregnant seemed to think the baby could have passed away a few months ago and therefore hcg was already back to 0.

I just don’t know what to make of it!

In my experience HCG levels start to fall as soon as the embryo dies even if you have no bleeding (I had this with a missed miscarriage) but I would be surprised if they would drop completely to zero if you still had a substantial amount of pregnancy tissue. What kind of coil did you have, a Mirena or a copper one? Do you generally have periods?

It does seem surprising.

it was a klyeena coil (low dose hormonal). I do normally have regular periods off the coil but was getting irregular bleeding on the coil

I think what I find a bit improbable about this is that the doctor who removed your coil thought they saw an embryo measuring 9 weeks and 5 days, which is very specific. I had a 3D ultrasound at 10 weeks in my first successful pregnancy. An embryo at that stage is recognisably human. It has a head with recognisable facial features, arms and legs and is 3-4cm from crown to rump. If the doctor really had seen an embryo at that stage on the ultrasound, I think you would have seen it come out. Not just a few clots.

Can you ask for a copy of the scan image?

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 14:37

Yeah I see what you mean, although some of the clots I have passed have been 4-5cm in size so the baby could have been inside them.

asking for a copy of the scan is a good idea

Sorry it's TMI but in my experience the foetus isn't inside a blood clot, it's inside a clear jelly like sac. I've had two MCs both around 8-9 weeks and both times it was very obvious when that had passed compared to a blood clot so I think at almost 10 weeks you would've definitely seen it

babyjellyfish · 11/02/2023 14:41

I suppose if the original doctor is right and you were pregnant but had a miscarriage months ago then the pregnancy tissue could have degraded to the point where it was no longer recognisable as an embryo. But if that was the case then how sure could they be that that was what they were seeing on the scan?

How would you feel if you were pregnant and had had a miscarriage?

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 14:44

Yeah I see what you mean, I can post a photo of what I’ve passed it it’s helpful but also don’t want to be TMI

Another thing is if it had been dead inside of you for several months I think you'd be really quite unwell, have you had a fever/chills/bad smelling discharge or anything like that over the past few months?

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 14:45

Not really, I did have some yellow/green discharge back in December which I thought was strange but only lasted a few days so I never thought any more into it

I have no objection to looking at a photo but if you do want to post it you should probably ask MNHQ to amend the thread title to put a warning in it.

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 14:52

I have asked MNHQ and will post a photo as soon as title is updated

In my experience pregnancy tissue is more grey and tissuey than red and clotty. What a mind fuck for you OP Flowers

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 15:20

From the comments on here I’m thinking even more unlikely that it was a miscarriage….but then that raises big questions about what else this massive bleeding episode could have been

OP posts:
babyjellyfish · 11/02/2023 15:23

Agree with @MeinKraft, it's a total mind fuck for you, especially given that you weren't trying to get pregnant.

I would probably choose to assume that it wasn't a miscarriage, but ask for another ultrasound to make sure that there isn't any more identified tissue/clotting hanging around in there.

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 15:25

Thread title has been updated so I have attached a photo….it is definitely a complete mind fuck

That looks like some of what I've passed when I had a miscarriage, but a lot more

I was passing clots like this about every 1/2 hour all day yesterday

I do think you had a miscarriage. That is what my 9 week miscarriage looked like. It is not always obviously a baby in appearance. I hope you are OK 💞

Thatcatisdrivingmenuts · 11/02/2023 15:48

I think so also, based on mine at that stage. I'm sorry.

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 16:01

Thank you both for sharing your experience. At least if I can accept that it is that, I can get some closure

OP posts:
gallina · 11/02/2023 16:16

Sorry @minuteoclock it does sound like it was a miscarriage x

babyjellyfish · 11/02/2023 18:43

I'm genuinely not sure, looking at that.

How would you feel if it was one? Do you want to have children in the future?

minuteoclock · 11/02/2023 20:11

I already have 2 children and not planning more but I would still be really sad to have lost a pregnancy
