I mean.... wtf?

When will this knife crime bullshit end? Makes me so worried for when my eldest starts high school next year.

Tewkesbury is quite a poor run down town..... my DD lives just up the road from there and says the roads by her are gridlocked. But it's horrifying. Lots of social media being shared about parents getting an email NOT to phone the school which is pretty appalling. Surely every instinct you have is to contact them....

It's on local news that a teacher has been taken to hospital with a suspected stab wound.

Can you imagine what it's going to be like for the 1-3 women on the phones, though? How are they supposed to help look after the children and maintain security when there could be anything up to three thousand phone calls each wanting to take 10 minutes apiece (and to have their child brought to the phone to speak to them personally), people turning up at the front gates demanding to come in, kids phoning their parents and winding one another up even more about it?

They'll still have people turning up and demanding to be let in, but at least they'll be able to help with that and the inevitable crowd control inside the building if they're not stuck on the phones being screamed at.

Yes, it's an expected reaction, but that doesn't change the fact that all those people phoning would make it worse.

As a parent of two children in secondary school, it's really sad but I wasn't surprised by this.

They've been in lockdown recently after old students got in but we weren't told until it had been resolved.

Some kids at our school are just horrible. They have no respect for teachers but they're reluctant to expell now. Loads are leaving next week and I've got no idea what's going to happen in September.

I am genuinely baffled by the assertion on this thread that schools are strip searching students. We absolutely do not have the authority to do that. It's why they keep their vapes in their pants.

Thegreatbigbarrieroflondon · 10/07/2023 17:57

@MrsHamlet

I have definitely witnessed this in one secondary. But, it doesn’t really surprise me that this may have been poor practice. That particular school is in special measures now.

These are the consequences of a school system that won't enforce discipline. Children are fearless and teachers are put in harms way.

noblegiraffe · 10/07/2023 18:38

Kids are stabbing each other outside of school far more often so I'm not sure that schools can be blamed when it happens on school premises.

MrsHamlet · 10/07/2023 18:49

These are the consequences of a child bringing a knife to school. Nothing more or less than that.

So you'd trust the police, which like any other profession, is going to be just as full of grifters, incompetent idiots, cowards and people who could easily do an average to poor job, to ensure your child's safety when they're under imminent threat of murder?

I'm assuming you obviously don't actually have children.

@picnicbasketandblanket

my faith in the police has certainly diminished in the last few years, but what would you do??

the last thing this type of situation needs is a thousand hysterical parents at the school.

whilst they leave a lot to be desired at times, leaving it to the police is really the only option.

I live in Tewkesbury. It's not a rough place, I mean it's got a rougher bit but it's not Gloucester. I don't lock my door etc. This is the first time I've heard of knife crime in the nearly 20yrs I've lived here. Such a shock. I'm sure there's a back story. Locally what people are saying is this was a yr11 child, there were 3 of them I believe. So they will have been finished for the year and have gone into school purposefully.

budgiegirl · 10/07/2023 22:47

Tewkesbury is quite a poor run down town

It really isn't. I live here, and it is, on the whole, a very pleasant, friendly place to live. My kids, until recently, attended the school in question.

Of course, as with any town, it's not without it's problems, but no more than any other town of it's size. Unfortunately, knife crime is on the rise in the UK as a whole, and even schools in the richest of areas are not immune.

Thinking of the staff and students of the school this evening. It must have been very frightening for all involved, and I'm glad the teacher seems to be recovering well (at least physically).

I hope the teacher and his pupils are OK.

A local school to me was in lockdown for what turned out to be a false alarm but caused other schools to be locked down too. The actions of the parents and the media made the situation that was dealt with in 15 minutes as everyone in the building followed the lockdown drill extend to several hours. The parents blocked roads causing chaos and preventing emergency services from getting in, children texting and calling their parents and each other meant they were riled up, members of the press jumped over neighbours fences so then there were then individuals on site that shouldn't have been and got a big telling off by the on site armed police. Being a sleepy town I expect the local paper got excited about not writing about seagulls stealing chips.

Parents need lockdown training too and taught what the appropriate actions are and how information will be given out, everyone descending on the school does no one any favours, although is the natural thing to want to do.

Totally agree with this

There was a stabbing in Tewkesbury last year, a neighbour killed his neighbour over a row about parking.

Hiddiddleyho · 11/07/2023 12:32

Yes there was. The dispute had been going on for a long time and you'd like to think it should never have been allowed to get to that.

Out of interest do stories like this make the news every time they happen anywhere in the country?

MichelleScarn · 11/07/2023 13:06

@Hiddiddleyho the neighbour incident or the teacher being stabbed?
Neighbour incident hadn't heard about, although I doubt people in Tewkesbury will have heard of similar incidents where i live, the teacher one heard on the news and up in Scotland as haven't heard of many similar.
