At what point do you give up on a car ?

And are throwing good money after bad ?

DH and I know nothing about cars what so ever but the Ford Galaxy we bought last year was a bargain at £600 for an 11 year old car with tax and an MOT.
Now the exhaust has gone, it needs a new tyre and there's something else not right. The local garage has quoted £500 for what they can see is wrong and of course whatever they uncover in the engine they'll quote for separately so I'm thinking it could be the same £500 again.
It drinks petrol like it's water, £60 a week for the school run and shopping, it's old and embarrassing but it's comfortable and all the kids have their own seat and space.

The other car we have is small and just about fits 3 in the back at a push (not to mention the odd kick and pinch when mum isn't looking) but really we could do with another car too.
Am wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom as to when you give up and try and buy something else or keep investing in what you have ?

I would have it scrapped now. last year our nissan micra was starting having problems. we fixed the first and when it did not start a few days later we decided to invest in a new used car. also because dc2 was on the way and we needed a car we actually all fit in.
bought a 3 year old zafira which is great!

Yeah the MOT is up this week and the tax the week after.
I was really happy with the £600 as you say not bad at all for a years worth, we've paid a lot more.

If we go for another one we'll only be able to afford about a £5,000 car so I'm thinking a scenic or something similar but just won't be as roomy and comfortable but then I guess will cost less in tax and petrol.

I think you should give up on this car and get something more reliable and in better mechanical condition - especially if you can afford it.

But - seeing as you/dh know nothing about cars - get any potential new purchase checked out/approved by someone who knows car mechanics before you buy.

Our Galaxy did the same we got rid. If you want to stick with a big car, go for another galaxy (cheaper parts) seat alhambra or vw sharan. But get a diesel!!! Our Galaxy was petrol and we used to go through £80 a week! We wished we had gone for the diesel.

The above 3 cars are all the exact same but different badges
