She paid the deposit, now we've changed our minds

Last autumn we booked our holiday for this summer, to France. At the time of booking we were very skint so my sister kindly paid the 100 euro deposit for us, as our christmas present.

Now, DH & I have decided to cancel the French holiday and opt for something far cheaper. We'll get 75 euro back if we give enough notice of our cancellation. I don't want to take the p*ss at all about this and I've asked my sister if she'd mind if we used the money we get back as a deposit on our (cheaper) holiday. She's said yes. But I still feel guilty, esp as money-wise we're a bit better off than we were last year. (My sister is far better off financially than me). But still. Should I give some of the (deposit) money back? We can afford to pay for this holiday without my sister's help, so I feel a bit funny about this.

What would you do?

I think you have to give her the full deposit back.

juuule · 06/06/2010 15:17

Give her the full deposit back.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/06/2010 15:18

You have asked your sister and she is fine with it, no issue.

Pay her back when you can.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 06/06/2010 15:20

I have just seen you said you can pay without her help so yes, offer it back and tell her you don't need it now.

thisisyesterday · 06/06/2010 15:20

i would give the full amount back

WellMeantHellBent · 06/06/2010 15:21

I would offer the full deposit back I think. As it was your Christmas present she might not want to take it though. If you can afford a holiday then you can afford to give it back. Just out of interest why did you book a cheaper holiday if you are better off now?

WellMeantHellBent · 06/06/2010 15:21

And why did you book a holiday if you were skint?

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/06/2010 15:22

Give her the full amount back - if she really wants you to have it in lieu of a Christmas present then she'll send it back. At that point, your conscience will be clear and you can keep it.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/06/2010 15:23

It was your present, rather than a loan? If I paid for someone's holiday deposit as a Christmas present, I wouldn't expect it back.

scurryfunge · 06/06/2010 15:23

If it was your Christmas present then surely it is up to you how you spent it.

unltd · 06/06/2010 15:28

why would you give any money back to your sister?

she gave you a christmas present, its up to you what you do with it

TrillianAstra · 06/06/2010 15:36

It was a present so mo need to give anything back.

Mummyisamonster · 06/06/2010 15:48

Thanks guys, really valued your comments! I will be refunding the deposit to my sister, she is happy with this, and I feel much happier with this too.

WMHB, we booked the French (camping) holiday knowing we could pay for it over the forth-coming months (we just didn't have the deposit money at the time) and although we're slightly better off now, I'm being extra cautious.

Thanks again all
