Grrrr... Facebook privacy!?

I was contacted three times using the email address I ONLY use on Facebook by separate advertising companies last week

I've since read an article in the Daily Mail about the lack of privacy on Facebook. I'm gonna remove all those applications (Farmville etc) as they seem to just have all my data now.

Didn't the Facebook founder recently say he doesn't believe in privacy and wants an "open world", or something similar? Not everyone agrees!! People will vote with their 'mouse' and discover other sites that are solidly based around privacy controls.

folkdirect.com is one of those. friendster is another. Be safe people!!

you must have agreed to give your email to Zynga for farmville etc.

FWIW I get email notifications for 3 Zynga games (Farmvile, Mafia Wars and Poker) but haven't had any spam at all on that address - and I gave it to them as soon as the email notification option came up.

I presume this is the article you read?

If so - then it's changed on FB since the article was published - you now have to opt-in.......

SheilaS · 14/05/2010 01:47

Nope, it was this one (click)

And yes, you grant permission for them to use data necessary to play the game or use the application, but you don't say they're allowed to go off and sell your data to any old company they choose.

Facebook privacy abuse is becoming a major issue and is being picked up by the media of late:

Zynga (Farmville) are well known for scamming and being unethical:

The founder of Facebook is not exactly ethical either: news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-20004853-36.html

Not to mention all the scammers advertising on Facebook!

Oops, sorry last link should be:

SheilaS · 14/05/2010 01:57

Exactly, it doesn't really give me much confidence in the site if the founder isn't really Mr Ethics himself!

I've actually started migrating my pics, videos, groups etc over to folkdirect.com while I wait for my friends to join too. Bebo is quite good, but doesn't have everything I want.

Simple but effective privacy - is it such a big ask!? Facebook has had it's day for me I must admit.

you need to google, there are websites that take you step by step how to make sure you don't share and they don't share

it's complicated and you jump through hoops

however it's not true that you opt in rather than opt out, in the most part

a lot is shared by default

Like backtotalkaboutthis says: "it's complicated"
