Kitten locked out of house on busy road,

Naetha · 11/04/2010 15:47

The people who rent one of the houses on the corner of my quiet cul-de-sac and the busy main road have a 6 month old kitten. It is locked out every day while the owners are out - usually between 8am and 3-5pm.

It is always going up to people, crying for attention. I put food out for it a couple of weeks ago because it followed me all the way back to my house crying all the way - it wolfed the food down. I knocked on the door later when the owners were back and they said the kitten had food and water round the back (but not in the open porch... .

It's always wondering in the road (the cul-de-sac road) and once I saw it tentatively wander into the main road when it was quieter. It always looks like it's scavenging / looking for something.

Should I do anything? I'm fairly certain if I do nothing it will get run over very soon. I've approached the owners once, and they didn't seem that fussed. Should I approach the RSPCA?

I definitely would contact the rspca. The kitten is in danger and the owners are not looking after it properly.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 11/04/2010 15:50

tbh, I'd start feeding it daily and encouraging it to come over to me.

But I'm a softie.

With no morals about stealing a cat, it seems

its a cat.

thats what they do.

all cats will scavage for food. and shit in your flowerbeds.

I'd be worried too, and would also try and get it to come into my house during the day.

Not feed it too much though, just a little bit - or it will get hugely fat

And ask the CPL/RSPCA what to do, they might have some ideas.

DramaInPyjamas · 11/04/2010 15:58

I agree with misdee. It's just what cats do.

misdee · 11/04/2010 16:00

all the locval cats miaow at me as we walk past. some follow us at the road.

my neighbours cat tries to get into my house as soon a si open the door. she once snuck in and dh found her asleep on the bed when he got home.

whooosh · 11/04/2010 16:02

I personally would offer it a very good alternative second home...if ti likes yours more...it will move in full time-cats are masters of theiur own destinies but do not deserve to be locked out all day.

Fliight · 11/04/2010 16:07

Misdee, you must be giving off pheromones or something

Fliight · 11/04/2010 16:09

Ask them sneakily where they got it - and if it was someone official like a rescue centre, ring them and say what is happening.

When people adopt cats they often have to sign something saying the cat won't be locked out, kept near a busy road etc.

misdee · 11/04/2010 16:09

no, they love Peter. He says he is claiming the neighbours cats as his own. as long as they stop pooing under the living room window

geordieminx · 11/04/2010 16:10

Steal it.

Naetha · 11/04/2010 20:21

I'd love to steal it, but I have four of my own cats! And yes those cats do dig up my flowerbeds, but I figure it's worth it

THe other thing is that the house is rented - not sure if the landlord allows pets, but I don't want them to get in trouble with the landlord over it, and then abandon the cat. (That's how we got cat no. 3).

I guess I'll have to call the rspca.

yes either report it or keep it. and you could go around the back of their house to see if there is food there why doesn't it go to the back if food there.???? why these sort of people have animals i'm not sure. poor little thing. my little cat is 9 months old and i still wouldn't dream of shutting him out.

TulipsInTheSunshine · 03/05/2010 17:26

5 is a great number

we have 5 cats and it's way more fun than 4

NatalieW74 · 11/06/2010 19:53

Did anything happen about the kitten Naetha??

Naetha · 14/06/2010 13:26

It's still there, hasn't been run over yet. I think they're a bit better about letting/keeping it in though as I haven't seen it anywhere near as much, even though the weather has been better.

Here's hoping it has a cat flap now
