Mad John is/was a nice guy, and local people did give a shit, most certainly. You would only call him "mad" John to distinguish him from any other Johns, otherwise you would just call him John to his face.

Hi, I know this is literally 10 years old but Mad John has died this week. There was a memorial service for him 5pm today at Southfields Station. Hundreds turned up to it, I’m not sure if you’re aware or if you’ll see this but it’s worth a try I suppose
