Take 10 year old out of school or.....

So our house has sold. Completion date mid April.
We want to move to Scotland.
Our oldest child is in year 6 and due to go on her residential school trip in May.
We could rent for a short here while, even though the shortest let we could get would be 6 months to allow her to finish her school year. This would involve us in moving twice. We would lose money on the rental if we then left it early to go to Scotland.
OR we could take her out of school and just go.

i don't know sweetheart could you tkae her out and then homeschool her if you can't find a place at a school near your house in scotland?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2010 11:58

can you bring her back for the residential?

Comfy · 01/03/2010 11:58

It's not so much the getting her into a school in scotland it's her missing a] her trip and b] the end of her final primary year here.
And thanks for your reply.

School have said they cannot guarantee her place on the trip as they have pupils on the waiting list to join the school and they would get her place if they wanted to go.

I would if possible wait till the end of her school year i think, I am in scotland and we finish end of june for summer holidays so your dd would only be in school for a short time them a big break for summer so might unsettle her more but if you do have to do it them i am sure she will adapt children are good at that. Good luck.

Yes she would finish here in July and start in scotland in August.
Where will we stay?.....
Its not easy.

Are there furnished "holiday" places locally? My parents used to let holiday cottages for longer lets in the winter.

Since it is before peak season you may find someone willing to let for a month or two. (or even one place for a few weeks then another). It would be a pain but do-able I would think. You could send most of your stuff to new house, live out of suitcases and a few boxes, at least until after the trip.

Bramshott · 01/03/2010 14:23

Holiday let is a good idea - some friends of ours took one for a month when they were between houses and it was not too expensive.

FiveOrangePips · 01/03/2010 14:31

I would move to Scotland asap, get your dd started in primary school, will she be going into P7? It will help her settle if she starts getting to know school at the end of term, and meet people in her class.

Comfy · 01/03/2010 14:59

DP and I have been discussing yet again and went over holiday lets. If we moved during the Easter holidays then potentialy would only have 3 weeks of school in england before her trip. Definitely a possibility.

I would get on with the move - there will be other school trips in future years.

Best of luck btw

heymammy · 01/03/2010 15:12

If dd stays at current school until end of Y6 then she won't get much of a summer holiday tbh. I agree with meltedmarsbars, I would just get on with the business of moving, it's hard enough already .

Comfy · 01/03/2010 15:18

Yes I think I agree.
Right off to further debate with DP.
Thank you for all of your opinions.

Most primary schools in Scotland have a week long residential trip in P7 so she will get to go on that. I also think it's a good idea to attend school and meet pupils and teachers before the summer break.
