If you child had managed to melt their coat in a shop

DS2 was standing with his back to a portable heater in a shop. I've now noticed the back has melted.

Am I right to think this heater was unsafe? I'm in two minds. On one hand it was a heater and thus hot but on the other, it shouldn't be hot enough to melt clothing nor put in a position it could do so. Especially in a public place like a shop.

There were no warning signs and no staff suggested he move.

yikes

That is v v dangerous

no idea what you could do - go back to the shop and see if the heater remains in situ, take photos and speak to the proprietor??

that is dangerous. i would definitley make the shop aware of it.

Where was the heater placed?

How close was he?

Make the shop aware, you know it is dangerous so really should inform them. Luckily on your ds's coat was damaged as it could have been his skin had he touched it with his hands.

It was near the door. I'm not entirely sure how close he was, I was paying and had been glancing at him to check he was ok (he's nearly 9). Not touching it though.

I'm definitely going to complain. Mainly as I gave to go back anyway ... I'm generally to cowardly to make a fuss! The coats only 2 weeks old. Still wearable.

BTW I'd not thought the heater would be that hot so I didn't think to suggest he move away.

Either the heater is dangerous or the coat is poor quality to melt when placed against a heater. I would mention this incident to both.

Oh, I have just re-read and it is a portable heater, they are usually hotter so it is more likely to be that. They should put a warning sign up near it at the very least. I would go in and inform them - you may save someone from being hurt/them from being sued!

You ought to mention - what would have happened if it had melted onto the skin, or caught fire! Eeek!
