Should I let dd go to her choir event?

Dd2 has only had 1 day of school since Christmas because of this very annoying snow.

She is a member of a choir, and on Friday they are recording a charity single. It was originally scheduled for last Friday, but had to be postponed.

Before Christmas, I sent a letter in to school asking for permission for dd to have the day off to attend the recording (local authority have OK'd it, but also need headteacher's permission).

By the time dd got to school, the day had come and gone, so I had to send another letter in yesterday with the amended arrangements. Dd was off again today, and I fear she will be off again tomorrow. Friday may well be the first day that school is open again.

So, my question is, should I send dd to the choir event on Friday, without the permission of the headteacher, and in the knowledge that she has already missed 2 days of school before Christmas and up to 6 days since Christmas (if they are off tomorrow)?

Even if they are in school tomorrow, I doubt the headteacher will have had time to consider the request for the day off, and they will have plenty of things to do which are more important than considering my letter. Both times previously I have asked for time off for dd for legitimate reasons, I have had to ask at least twice before I had a response, and that was in the normal, un-snow affected times.

WWYD?

yes, let her go to choir. Sorted.

LOL! Thanks for that.

Anyone else have an opinion, or am I overthinking this?!

Yes I think you are probably over thinking it!!!

What's the worst thing that could happen if head teacher said 'no'??? You'd be shown as having an unauthorised abscene which would only cause any problem if you had ten in a year (and I speak as someone who never takes children out of school for non essentials!!).

It's a worthwhile reason to be off so I can't see what the problem would be. If your DD does go in tomorrow I would still send a letter but if you don't get a reply just send her to the choir thing.

Yes, let her go to her choir event.

Very educational in it's own right....as the LEA obviously recognise.

i would do the choir

ravenAK · 13/01/2010 21:39

Definitely do the choir.

One more day of missed school under the circumstances won't be a big deal - bound to be kids off until Monday anyway, unless the snow magically disappears overnight, so I'd expect tomorrow & Friday to be days she could miss without lasting harm.

As for formal permission, it'll be the least of the HT's worries atm, so I wouldn't expect written 'permission' as such. But I would be quite confident of them recording it as 'other authorised absence' - the very last thing they'll want is to make their attendance look worse by putting it down as 'unauthorised'.

Thanks all, my gut feeling was that she should go, but suddenly wondered whether she should miss more school...

Yes, the choir

brassick · 14/01/2010 11:35

Just to update, my friend whose daughter is also in the choir told me that she had emailed the school and they had given permission that way.

I hadn't considered that route, as my experience of emailing the school has never been very positive (ie never had a response). Anyway, I gave it a try this morning, and got a positive response almost straight away.

So it's all sorted.

Thanks for your input.
