Very generous pub manager, WWYD?

I've been on the Isle of Wight this weekend for a family wedding. We were staying in a premier inn. We went out to lunch just prior to getting back on the ferry to come home, only for my debit card to be declined in the pub we'd chosen to eat in (family friendly, lovely pub, been there before). I phoned my bank from the pub car park (no signal) to find out what was happening as there should have been plenty in the account.

Turns out the premier inn had taken payment for our room multiple times, completely clearing the account out. I apologised to the manager, explained the situation and paid for the drinks that had already been poured with the last £5 I had in my purse. We sat down to drink them and were about to leave when the manager comes over, says she can't bear to see the kids go without and offers us a lunch for free to share amongst the kids.

What a lovely, generous thing to do. I felt really bad about accepting but the kids were just so hungry. I couldn't stop thanking her and they even gave the kids little toys when we were leaving too!

Now, I fully intend to send a card to say thank you and a box of choccies to say thank you, as generosity like this needs to be acknowledged. However I'm wondering whether I should maybe pop a cheque in the card to pay for the meal? It was given freely with no expectation of payment and I'd hate to offend and I don't know whether sending a cheque would offend her?

So WWYD?

Don't pay in case it does offend. Ask them if they will stick your card up somewhere prominent, in the card thank them for their generosity with specifics so they can show other customers how great they are?

LilRedWG · 09/11/2009 11:35

Don't pay. Send a card and perhaps some flowers.

Don't put in the card what they did - or others might try the same.

This sort of thing re-instates your faith in human nature, doesn't it!

I think the "you have restored my faith in human nature" line might work rather well.

If you absolutely must send a cheque, then do so but write that you're unsure about it -it will be appreciated, and they can always rip it up!

Agree with the 'you have restored my faith in human nature' line.

Very nice to hear

BAD Premier Inn Wonder if they're in cahoots with Tesco?

What a lovely landlady

How about including a cheque, but suggesting it is put in the staff's Christmas tips box?

BrianGiggs · 14/12/2009 22:13

How lovely.

A few weeks ago my mum was in Sainsbo's - putting her shopping through the check out - old lady behind her had put her shopping onto the belt when she reaslised that that she couldnt find her purse - eventually she rememebered she had left it at home, but thankfully had bus pass to get her home (strangely about 15 miles away). She was going to put her shopping back, but mum told her that she would pay - came to about £6 or £7 - the woman behind the till couldnt believe what she was doing and had a real face.

Anyways the woman took mums address - even though mum said it was fine - next day a cheque and lovely card arrived.

I'd add that you will be/have contacted HQ to tell them how lovely this person was and how much you love Premier Inn.
Who knows, you may get naother freebie!
(I once wrote to Staples to tell them how lovely their staff were-always-and quite unexpectedlty got a voucher for £10 from them.)

Curiousmama · 14/12/2009 22:23

Aww what a lovely mum you have geordieminx. I'd have done that. Hope the faced cashier never comes unstuck then!

Flowers are a good idea for pub manager.
