if you found a cheque that was old , therefore out of date, would you ask the giver to write you a new one?

Watching King of Queens on Comedy Central. Dh loves it.

And this has happened to them. They found a cheque, in a gravy boat (wedding present), and the bank said it's outdated(7 years old) and can't be banked. They want to ask for a new cheque.

I don't know if I could do it. Could you?
The givers would have known that they hadn't used the boat for 7 years, ever in fact.

Unless I could say I had used the boat but the cheque must have fallen behind a cupboard etc...
