Am watching Grumpy Old Men....waiting for JR to start on BBC1.....and Nigel Havers has just described Bono as "Bono. Oh farking hell. He really is the bollocks bollocks, isn't he?"! I know its mean but I love anything slagging off Bono because he is such a twunt.

Am PMSL!!

agree with scottishmummy

It's not that rich people shouldn't have political views PW, of course they should if they want to. It's more that some rich people are out of touch with reality. Hence people getting pissed off with S. Goldsmith publishing a book on how to save the planet in little ways while her lifestyle meant that she had a huge carbon footprint compared to an average person.

Rich celebs are with a point of view and no sense of reality are a bit like a boring person that you get stuck next to at a dinner party. You start off thinking that there's nothing wrong with them enjoying re-enacting civil war battles, "each to their own" you think. But by the time they've talked about it for several hours and insisted that you join them the following weekend you want to kill them.

TheCrackFox · 24/01/2009 21:16

Good point Bran.

Bono lectures us about third world debt (which I agree is terrible) and expects us to pay tax to help his cause whilst at the same time lowering his tax obligations by shifting it all to Holland. WTF? He needs to practice what he preachers.

bran · 24/01/2009 21:26

There are plenty of rich celebs out there doing good things without pissing people off about it. Bill Gates for instance, admittedly he does annoy a lot of people for various reasons but I've never heard anyone be scathing about his efforts to eradicate malaria. Being famous and having a public voice can be a great thing if you have a cause to promote, it's just annoying when combined with self-importance, pomposity or a lack of intelligence.

policywonk · 24/01/2009 21:31

Well I suppose the self-importance/pomposity is subjective (although I accept that a lot of people think that Bono is pompous).

WRT intelligence/information, I've read several accounts of Bono impressing civil servants and international diplomats with his knowledge of development issues. The way he presents it to the public might be simplistic, but his understanding of it is reported to be very sophisticated.

TheFallenMadonna · 24/01/2009 21:34

That's even more bloody insulting then!

policywonk · 24/01/2009 21:35

Are you saying that people would find him less pompous if he went into detailed discussions of the Millennium Development Goals or Local Agenda 21? Cos from the look of the posts on this thread, I doubt it...

TheFallenMadonna · 24/01/2009 21:39

Fair enough. I just don't like him .

And that hat he flew first class was iconic, apparently...

TheStatueOfLiffey · 24/01/2009 21:45

This is apropos nothing relevant, but he's actually a distant relative of mine. My Dad's 1st cousin is married to his Aunt Joan! There you go. So, we have first cousins in common.

I have never been invited round on christmas day though.

ScottishMummy · 24/01/2009 21:54

PW,dont underestimate other posters i think we have the intellectual ability to grasp global sustainable development. just cannot stomach a tax dodging millionaire braying on

bran · 24/01/2009 22:03

I wasn't implying that Bono lacked intelligence (although I wouldn't be at all surprised if he is self-obsessed and I do find him pompous). I just meant that it's one of the things that would make it difficult for me to be sympathetic to a celebs presentation of a 'cause'.

For instance, I'm sure that Scherezade (must learn how to spell that) had a few good tips and meant well with her book, but the few things that I have read in interviews etc makes me think that she falls into the nice-but-dim category of rich celeb. So I'm unlikely to actually read her book or implement any of her planet saving ideas.

policywonk · 24/01/2009 22:23

I didn't mean that SM. I meant that people would not find him less pompous if he went into more detail.

Flying a hat first class is twattish; can't argue with that one.

ScottishMummy · 24/01/2009 22:30

LOL a hat 1st class, that is risible.one wonders when you are that out of touch surrounded by paid sycophants has no one got the nerve to say "oh have a feckin word lum heid..."

BalloonSlayer · 26/01/2009 08:07

PMSl at the hat.

Hope the cabin crew had enough sense to shove it in a locker and give its seat away to an upgraded person, perhaps from a 3rd world country . . .

PuppyMonkey · 26/01/2009 08:14

Going back to op: "Bono. Oh farking hell. He really is the bollocks bollocks, isn't he?" No offence to Nigel Havers, but I don't understand that insult! Wtf is he on about?

KingRolo · 26/01/2009 21:08

Ah Bono... we call him Nobo in our house.

ScottishMummy · 26/01/2009 21:32

bono will always be bonner to me

tillytips · 27/01/2009 14:11

We call him Bonio in our house.
T**t

Sidge · 27/01/2009 14:27

I like Bono about as much as I like Sting.

I.e. not at all.
