Food left out overnight - bin or not?

Dazedandconfus · Yesterday 12:05

I think it maybe needs to go in the bin but…
Made quorn bolognese last night - finished cooking at 7pm and left to cool. Transferred into storage container and lid on, but forgot to go back and put in fridge.

So left out in the kitchen which was maybe down to 15 degrees overnight.

Plan was to make it into lasagne today.

Would you chuck and start again? Google suggests I should 😢.

Quorn! It’s not meat! Will be fine.

DP made a veggie chilli tonight. There's some left over which I'm going to take to work for my lunch tomorrow.
I haven't bothered putting it in the fridge tonight. Tomorrow, it will be in a tupperware box in my lunchbox which I'll keep in my classroom cupboard until lunchtime.
I do this all the time and am never ill.

I do put leftovers in the fridge when we're in the middle of a heatwave but wouldn't bother at this time of the year.

I dont think of quorn as food. Its like leaving a tray of homemade biscuits out.

You do realise that there was a time when not every household had a fridge, yet somehow the human race survived.

A hundred years ago the average life expectancy age was 58 - millions of people died every year specifically because they left quorn bolognese out overnight. Fact.

Bin

Sunshineandgrapefruit · Yesterday 23:19

I would bin it. A quick Google bsays Quorn shouldn't be left out of fridge for more than two hours once cooked.

Janefx40 · Yesterday 23:23

I would probably eat it if it was just overnight so the temperature was low - especially if it was hot when you first left it out so needed to cool anyway. FWIW I’ve started using the Linda McCartney vegemince instead and find it has a better texture and taste!

NeverFlyCoach · Yesterday 23:33

I’ve eaten a kebab that spent 2 days on the kitchen counter. This would definitely get eaten in my house 😂

Am hoping my grandchildren survive tonight! I cooked a bolognaise for them at 9am with Quorn and they ate it about 6pm ..fridge not available 🙏

Name me one single person who has survived for millenia.

Quorn (mushroom) is high protein and high protein foods have a higher food poisoning risk. At home, I would eat the quorn (although our kitchen drops way below 15oC overnight at the moment) but at work I would be breaching my food hygiene training if I did this.

It's actually microfungus not mushroom.

I often make soya mince bolognaise or chilli or a beef casserole and it stays on then hob in the pan covered and reheated more than once over a couple of days. Sometimes it gets bunged in the fridge but not usually. Done that for 50 years and we are fine !

likelysuspect · Today 06:39

I'd eat it, quorn or meat.

Rubyupbeat · Today 06:41

This happens with me all of the time, we use it and nothing has ever happened (and I have a very sensitive tum)

Rubyupbeat · Today 06:42

Meant to say we are veggies, not sure I would chance it with meat.

I'm more inclined to say bin it before you cook it or just leave it in the supermarket, and make some a real vegetarian meal that doesn't rely on the product of a chemical works.

Ineffable23 · Today 07:43

I now set an alarm for myself for stuff like this, because I know it will just float out my mind.

intheshadyborder · Today 07:45

It'll be fine! Can you not smell if something's off? Usually it smells more sour or a bit gross.

HumanOfTheWeek · Today 09:05

I would use it but like others I am fairly laid back about this kind of thing.
My best friend routinely leaves leftovers and whole roast chickens out overnight in the winter. This is a step too far for me but she hasn't had food poisoning yet.

TonicGinIceFruit · Today 09:16

It’s not even meat! Just make sure it’s piping hot when you reheat it for the ragu. I’d probably even do this if it was meat, especially this time of year when your kitchen was likely to be fairly cool overnight.

OhYeahOhYeah · Today 10:38

I’ve cooked with Quorn mince for 30 years, it has never made me ill, and I quite often leave it (bolognaise) in a closed pan on the hob overnight accidentally without a single issue.

Use it, you’ll be fine

EmmaB1309 · Today 15:55

I’ve never cooked with quorn but do this all the time with beef mince. Regularly leave bolognese, chilli or just plain mice and gravy in the pot over night after I’ve cooked it and never had any problems.
