@cuckoolodger may I have your cinnamon rolls recipe please?

I found a cracking recipe for roast parsnips that turn out with crispy edges, like roast potatoes. So I’ll be making them with the usual roast and other trimmings. We usually make a nod to turkey cos DH thinks it’s not Christmas dinner without but the main meat will be a rib of beef. I bloody love making Christmas dinner.

It’s definitely not too early. If you want to order meat, you’ll need to get a wiggle on.

Breakfast: I’m quite partial to a bowl of coco pops while DH will probably go without but pick at turkey and home made sausage rolls as he’s cooking.

Lunch: Turkey, roast potatoes, chipolata sausages from the butchers, wrapped in streaky bacon, Yorkshire puddings, home made sage & onion stuffing, cabbage and sprouts boiled for hours, eighties mum style (nobody eats either apart from me and DN, and we like them like that), sweetcorn, peas and carrots. None of us like parsnips or swede so we don’t bother. Vegans will be having vegan equivalents but with Paxo stuffing without added butter. We’ll have M&S Black Forest iced gateau and they’re having the M&S vegan chocolate torte with chocolate ice cream.

Tea isn’t usually a thing as DH has no sense of portion control and cooks extra but there’s always plenty to choose from.

I prefer Boxing Day, cold meats, pigs in blankets, DH’s stuffing and bubble and squeak. I prefer it to Christmas dinner. I did treat myself to a proper trifle bowl recently so I’m thinking about a clementine trifle but haven’t seen a recipe I love yet.

What’s your stuffing recipe please 🙏

I remember being 8 months pregnant with my daughter and cooking Xmas dinner for 18 people. I sat peeling bags of Brussels only to get to the last bag and I realised they were pre peeled 🤣

It occurred to me yesterday that I’d usually have made my mincemeat (Delia’s) and 🎄puds by now. Time to get a move on…
And the Ps in Bs won’t be far behind - best sausages, thirds wrapped in half a rasher of streaky bacon, 2 on a cocktail stick, full box in the freezer. They take hardly any time, cheaper than buying, and at least you know the quality of the sausages.

We've tried a few things over the years, but landed exactly back where my parents did when I was a kid. Christmas day we have chicken. There's only 4 of us, chickens are dead easy and the kids absolutely love it. When they're older and don't want my attention all the time I'll try to be more fancy again. In the meantime I read threads like this to live vicariously 😆

Arrangements not 100% set yet, but I think I'm hosting. 8-10 people, including my ND fussy eater 6 year old, 2 vegetarians and my SIL with many food allergies.

If we are hosting, I'm going to do away with the big dinner. We don't have enough seats at the table for that many people, DD doesn't love the big formal meal and tbh I don't want to do it. I'd rather have stuff I can mostly prep in advance and enjoy the day a bit!

Instead I'm thinking a buffet/dinner hybrid, similar to what lots of people do on Boxing Day. I'll cook a ham on Christmas Eve and I'll ask MIL to cook a turkey (as they think Christmas isn't Christmas without one). I'll ask the vegetarians to either bring their nut roast or give me the recipe so I can cater for the allergies.

Then I'll do a couple of things that are twists on the regular dinner (shredded Brussels winter salad and a veggie gratin), then trimmings and some decent bread/cheeseboard/pickles/crudites to make up the rest.

Won't bother with a starter as I'll do canapes an hour or so before dinner - unsure what yet to cater for the many tastes. For dessert, an M&S Black Forest Gateau as it's my all time favourite, Christmas pudding and I might ask someone else to make something like Key Lime Pie.
