If you're in your 40s what kind of parties do you like

Just out of curiosity! What would your dream party consist of?

I went to a birthday/Halloween party last night. It was in a room in a pub. No food!! just a bar. A DJ and LOUD music. Most of the room was taken up by a dancefloor that was barely used while everyone sat on chairs squished up against the edges of the room where people had to scream at each other to be heard above the music no one was dancing too.
The room did look good though with Halloween decorations and everyone made an effort with fancy dress which was fun.

I'd much prefer comfortable sofas spread out, a great playlist or a jukebox, a small dancefloor. Volume a bit lower so I could catch up with the people I haven't seen in months. Food (I couldn't believe there was zero food last night!!), maybe some silly party or board games or cards for those that wanted to play, something from the host - maybe a little quiz or speech or... something. I think some sort of entertainment can help bring people together especially when lots of the people attending didn't know many of any others.
It probably doesn't help I don't drink booze anymore.

What does a good party consist of for you?

Maybe age doesn't matter actually! I guess for me I would've been happy with just loads of alcohol when hounder whereas I'm not now, but that might just be me and not have anything to do with age!

A good party is one I am not at! You did ask! 😁

Because you're poor company or you get drunk and do something awful or something else?!

Me too, I’m afraid. A party somewhere I am not is the best sort.

Comedycook · 01/11/2026 19:36

Your party sounds good to me op!

Boatfield · 01/11/2026 19:37

One that I'm not invited to

Kerfflufeln · 01/11/2026 19:51

Every scenario of party is an absolute fucking no go.

Forced to attend functions for work, I turn up at the last possible minute, endure the socially acceptable time, around 2 hours then say I’m going to the toilet and do not go back.

I am a socially awkward introvert who does not drink alcohol at all ever, food is a bloody situation of stress as I’m a vegetarian so there is rarely anything for me.
I don’t even bother to dress it up any more, if I’m invited to weddings, birthdays, anniversary celebrations it’s a straight up no.

A pyjama party

A nice meal in a restaurant that doesn’t have loud background music.

Dreadingtheday · 01/11/2026 20:19

I also don’t really like them anymore

I would say food, a small gathering, and nice music but not too loud.

Nincompoo · 01/11/2026 20:21

Someone’s kitchen chatting absolute shit at 4am.

nomoreforks · 01/11/2026 20:25

A party at someone's house. Lots of nibbles and picky bits. Some margaritas for those who want them , but no stress for those don't drink. Some cheesy music (80s, 90s and 00s) and dancing.

fartoomuchtoblerone · 01/11/2026 20:27

My favourite party are the kids ones where you drop your kid off and leave, and the parent insists they’re happy to keep them for 4 hours instead of the standard two. Bliss 😁

cheezncrackers · 01/11/2026 20:30

At a friend's house. Nice music, not too loud, good quality drinks and nibbles, ideally can walk or take a short taxi ride home, can piss off home by 10-ish Grin

mtobrokeme · 01/11/2026 20:36

I’m 43 and my favourite kind of party is no party! That’s nothing to do with my age but everything to do with my antisocial personality. I can’t think of anything worse.

Aviarythebird · 01/11/2026 20:40

At someone’s home. Lots of food and drink. Ideally a fire pit in the garden maybe with marshmallows and lots of chairs. Sofas inside. Maybe a focal point like fireworks or a cake or photos or something.

Iknewit · 01/11/2026 20:41

If it’s music I like, I like clubs and parties in bars/clubs. Happy with loud music and as long as I know not to expect food that wouldn’t bother me.
I do like somewhere to sit though.
I like parties though and many on here really don’t.

H202too · 01/11/2026 20:43

We went to a party in the summer. Most people sat outside as the music was too loud. I said the same most people just want to chat and catch up now not scream over the music. Food is a must. Poor not to offer food.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 01/11/2026 20:48

Absolutely no interest whatsoever in parties or going out in the evening unless it’s for a nice meal or the cinema with dh. I’m 46 and spent my entire late teens and 20s partying non stop and I’m completely over it now. I am very introverted now and don’t even have any friends or want any…!

SixAndJuliet · 01/11/2026 20:53

At someone’s house (not mine), walking distance from home. No more than 15 people and they’re people I already know and like. Plenty of food and cheesy music. Finishes before midnight.

Theotheron · 01/11/2026 20:53

Spanking.

WitcheryDivine · 01/11/2026 20:56

Good question. Room in a pub with food and music and space to talk is lovely, round at someone’s house with plenty of booze would be great if I had a babysitter.

Went to a birthday recently which was private dining room in a restaurant and that was really relaxed and nice.

Just to balance this thread out I love parties and I’m sociable, it’s wonderful catching up with old friends (or friends of friends) and meeting new people. You never know what you’ll learn or who will make you laugh. I don’t believe the people who are antisocial at 40 were any fun at parties at 20 either. It’s just a matter of taste. I’m a complete misery on a 10 mile hike for example.

NewLifter · 01/11/2026 20:59

Also no interest in parties. Speeches, board games and a quiz is literally my idea of hell 😅

I like going out to see live music or hanging out with friends in a home or a quiet dinner out

vjvhj · 01/11/2026 20:59

Good friends, good food. I prefer to be at a friend’s house for a party rather than a room in a bar / pub. Yes to music - but the music has to match the mood rather than set the mood. Usually some good cocktails and a drunken dance later. Bed no later than midnight. I’m 42.
