Has anyone had ladybirds coming onto the house?

Since Friday, we have had several ladybirds in the house. I have now read that that this is happening as a lot are coming indoors due to weather conditions. I've never even seen a ladybird in the garden before.

I understand that they are not dangerous but finding one walking towards me on the couch has just freaked me out.

What I've not been able to find yet is whether they then go dormant, and when they wake up. Also. if that will mean they are flying about the house when they do!

(I have read a de-bunk of the Sun newspaper headline about STD-infected ladybirds - apparently they do not infect humans.)

Is anyone else experiencing this? Could the small number I have seen indoors indicate that there is a huge amount of them hidden somewhere?

Absolutely loads , I’ve never seen so many. My child hates the smell of them and can walk in a room and smell the ladybird before seeing it. I can’t but apparently it’s a thing.

Mine are great. They always knock politely and wipe their feet on the way in. Please and thank you all the way and never make much noise. Perfect houseguests. Less messy than my spider friends as well.

I live in Edinburgh and we've had loads of the little rascals recently. Had lots in the summer of 2025, not many this summer but a recent infestation over the last month or so. Had none for years. I particularly dislike the black with red spots ones, hate seeing them flying about. They like snoozing in the upstairs bedrooms curtains.

Some of these comments are strange to me. When I was brought up in the 70s ladybirds were seen as our friends and we said a poem before removing them from the house. I’m terrified of all spiders and insects apart from ladybirds. Am I the only one brought up this way?

I was also brought up in the 70’s. Was the rhyme along the lines of “ladybird, ladybird, fly away home …”. I’ve always liked them, not scared of them, though one day last summer was a bit if a shockers as there were thousands of them where I am. But yeah, much rather a ladybird than a giant house spider 🐞

Yes, not very often, but sometimes when they are disturbed if I shake them out of the bedroom curtains. Or if I remove them out of the window they will fly off.

For some reason I get them every year in the bathroom, but in the spring, not the autumn. I put peppermint essential oil on cotton balls on the window ledge and they clear off in about an hour - they hate the smell. You can get it from Holland and Barrett.
