Best Small Car?!

I’m planning to upgrade my current car - Fiat 500 2018 plate. I love it but it’s too small and I don’t enjoy motorway driving in it.

12k max budget
5 doors
Feels sturdy on the motorway
Small-ish as I live in a city centre with small parking spaces

I would love a Polo or A1 but I’m unsure whether I’d be able to get a decent enough one without problems in my budget - I’m literally open to any suggestions!

Thank you x

VW Up feels like a roller skate on the motorway.

We had a 5 door Suzuki Swift, best car we ever had! We did Germany - UK in it a couple of times as well.

the basic one is only 65-75 hp isn't it? ok for a town car, i personally would be scared on a motorway in it

I love my Polo. I paid 14k for it in the Summer, it’s 3 years old and had 5000 miles on the clock when I got it. I think you’d get something decent with your budget.

I went from a 500 to an Aygo X Hybrid recently - similar reasons to you. It’s great, but I will always miss the Fiat!

I love my Hyundai i10, Toyota Yaris are also great cars but pricey.

Are Audi, Seat and Skoda ones to avoid?

I have seen some nice Kia Rio’s that I like.

Ooh I have one of those now. Had the Hyundai i20 before. The Rio is lovely to drive but so was the Hyundai, would say Rio seats more comfy.

I have an i10 and I love it - with the seats down it still fits all my camping gear - nice reliable car, good to drive and nippy

Absolutely no idea TBH. I can't remember which one we had now but it might have not been the most basic one. 1.2L engine I think? Would have been the 2013-2017 version. Wikipedia says 92 hp.

I remember it had a very good NCAP rating, which pleased me.

It’s absolutely fine very safe

It’s not really though is it? It would be smashed to utter pieces in a 70mph crash.

If you want something sturdier than your F500 OP, don’t buy another car that’s a similar size/shape. A proper hatchback (like a Polo or Golf) would be much better, and safer.

Fiat 500e!

Skoda Fabia. It’s basically a VW Polo. Mine is 16 years old and has done over 125k miles and the only major work needed was the cam chain change. Incredibly reliable little car. I do 4+ hour journeys every couple of months and it’s fine.

Olinguito · 29/10/2026 02:37

I also have a Skoda Fabia and am very happy with it - bought it new 9 years ago and it has been very reliable.

We have a Toyota Yaris hybrid ( non plugin) and it’s a fab car. Very comfortable and very capable on the motorways. Very cost efficient too. We get 75 mpg.
