I'm on BP medication in my late 50s. GP is thinking of increasing it. My readings are around 140/90.

I do weights 2 to 3 times a week. I walk 3 miles a day - more at the weekend. Do Pilates once a week. I lost a stone and a half over the last 2 years but I'm still I'm a stone and a half overweight.

I eat healthily, lots of fibre, occasional ready meal - maybe once a week. Portions too big though..

What's actually worked for you?

Running every day, drinking less alcohol, walking, vege juices

I love V8 juice, but it is unfortunately high in salt.

Thank you very much, @Sunbringer and @Ilovemyfam

Home tests are often lower than at the surgery. 140/80 is still in the stage 2 hypertension range. 120/60 is normal. I’d be aiming to get under 130/80 before I’d relax.

120/80 is normal!
And the ‘normal’ does increase with age
My doc says they would like 135/85 or below

I'm the same. My weight is okay, I walk for miles every day and my GP sent me for all sorts of tests. He eventually agreed that it is probably hereditary, my DM was on bp medication for years and her DM died from a stroke. I'm happy enough to take the meds.

I’m happy with meds too , no side effects once you get used to them and they do actually protect against long term health events

Looks like grapefruit too

Itsthewoluff · 28/10/2026 10:39

Be careful with grapefruit is you are on some other meds. You aren’t supposed to take them as they contraindict.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 28/10/2026 11:00

No. I've done the weight loss, removed UPFs, hardly any salt, exercise a lot. Nothing helps except the medication. Went without for 3 days as forgot them on a short break. BP through the roof.
Some people have a tendency to HBP in my opinion.

HatethedarknightsQW · 28/10/2026 11:30

I'm on meds and have no intention of coming off them. But if there's other stuff I can be doing I might as well try it.

Losing weight seems to be the big one, as does some more planking and wall sits. And beetroot! Had a beetroot salad with dinner last night....

Are you on HRT? The evidence shows that it better than statins or BP meds at preventing heart disease and reducing cardiac events.

That is NOT what the evidence shows - do better research rather than spouting misinformation please!

Pennyfan · 31/10/2026 14:16

When I started using a low salt substitute, my BP went down. It also has the benefit of replacing the sodium with potassium-although take care if you have kidney disease. Regular exercise, especially isometric has been shown to reduce it. Sometimes though, however many good habits you have, some people will need medication.

bababamama · 31/10/2026 14:24

Unfortunately some people have familial high blood pressure, every woman in my family has it by 50, my 7 stone cousin, my slim mum, my late skinny grandmother, her sisters…. I’ve got no chance so I take the pills and enjoy life

Platypusdiver · 31/10/2026 15:14

The last time I did mine it had gone down to 110 from 120. I had been cycling 30 mins to work and then 30 mins back again for a month while waiting for a new car to arrive.

Reduce caffeine use low salt (or much less salt), lose weight. For some people it's genetic and drugs are the only answer.

Ive done all the natural stuff and it did help. But I have been on 2 codeine in the morning for osteoarthritis and my blood pressure seems to have lowered quite a bit since. Could be coincidence, but who knows?

The pain could have been pushing up your blood pressure.

You need to remove caffeine and salt from your diet. Don’t smoke or drink if you do.
