Today I have got 2 hours of free electricity via Octopus. If you had 2 free hours, what would you do with it?

I’m doing the following:

  • as much laundry as I can using the dryer
  • cooking a beef rendang, apple pie, and a load of roast spuds
  • batch cooking individual meat pies
  • turning the gas heating off and using an electric heater
  • vacuuming everywhere then washing the vacuum head afterwards (IYKYK)

We had two hours today too so we had the washing machine on, the dishwasher, oven to cook a joint of meat, vacuumed and did the ironing. Charged all devices too.

I am just on their normal tariff. I get emails during the week for power downs usually in the afternoon for a power down between 6-7pm that day and you have to opt in for that. Literally 2 clicks on my phone.

Then on a Friday if I qualify that week I get the email about weekend happy hours and I get either 1 or 2 hours for free and I can choose the time slots. This weekend was any 1 hour slot (I could choose 2) from 7am to 2pm, so the last slot was 2-3pm.

Today's free energy was because of the wind power generated from the storm, not a guess, that is in the email.

I did a wash ready to tumble and found out the tumble dryer belt had snapped so I didn’t get the most out of it! And I’ve lots of wet washing now. I did peg it out but it was too cold to fully dry.

I did whack the immersion on for my two free hours though.

Only just back from holiday so didn’t have enough ingredients to make anything in the oven.

And it IS free for PPs in doubt! They refund whatever you’ve clocked up in your chosen hours. I’m on a fixed tariff so they can’t charge me more later in the day to make up for it.

Saying that, I guess they’ll do all their financial modelling to ensure future rates can realise projected profit despite all the freebies, so I suppose we may end up indirectly paying in the future.

@LadyLexi can I ask who your supplier is please?

Lifejigsaw · 25/10/2026 18:11

I have 9 hours to use! I didn’t know you had to use them by Nov 1st 😔

Summerunlover · 25/10/2026 18:19

I would charge my car if I got free hours.

Jumperorcardi · 25/10/2026 22:13

@LadyLexi thanks for letting me know

In case fellow Octopus users missed it, the Happy Hours are going to continue in a (probably) similar fashion until Valentine's Day next year. This might not be as good:
"Exchange tokens for a Happy Hour: Often 2 or 3 token will unlock 1 Happy Hour but on high-priced weekends, it could be more."

(£2.18 saved in Sunday's free hour)

AutumnOakTree · 28/10/2026 12:30

Most I’ve saved is 27p!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/10/2026 14:43

I've not done the math's but my partner thinks we save around £4.40 by charging the car during the free hour.
