Is anyone else absolutely terrified of this. My mind is working over time thinking of all possibilities of what we may and may not need and where to store all these things. I have a 2yr old too so extra pressure to keep him fed and hydrated. I know they say just incase of a storm or power outage but what if something worse was to happen like how much cash do you actually need to have at home like most people we don’t have ‘spare money’ we live payment to payment so doing that is super difficult and same for stock piling at what point is it enough of everything there’s so much to consider even down to period supplies and toiletries right up to food and water I just can’t cope. How’s everyone else coping and dealing with this oh and medication like to make sure you have enough of everything is crazy it’s such hard work and as I said my minds doing overtime with worry and stress I can’t cope

It must be exhausting living like this. I haven’t given it a second thought.

I’m in a holiday cottage in Devon. We’re stocked up with sausages, eggs, bacon, beer, wine, quality street and water so all good here!

No we didn't in the seventies.

Some of were prepared for a nuclear strike, so yes, we had food, water, medicines and first aid supplies stocked up. We just ran with a full food cupboard, which when living at the end of a supply route, was considered good housekeeping in those days.

And yes, we did experience winter power cuts and blocked roads for several days at a time. It's just a matter of getting your head around what you might need if shops are closed/empty and resupply will take a few days.

For those like @nahlaaaa who are concerned about money - the way we used to build up stocks was by buying a few extra things every week. Cash wise, try to put away £5 per week as well. I know it can be really difficult if you're on a tight budget, but even a little at a time can build up really quickly.

There will be plenty of people like myself who camp. We have a stove and grill that runs on calor gas. Will not be broadcasting this though as Ive read enough dystopian fiction to know looters will be rife and although DS is handy with a Nerf gun, not sure he could protect us.

oo, just remembered I've got some Nerf guns! I must get some target practice in.

I'm a 70's child. My mum
always kept a small box of tins in the bottom of her wardrobe. It was tinned potatoes, corned beef and cans of soup mainly. We always had candles handy plus a battery powered radio and a torch. I remember lots of power cuts.

We were a camping family so they had everything else they needed for cooking.

I understand so many people thinking it’s crazy to be so scared but having a little one and already being am anxious person seeing this kind of thing really put the fear of god in me… I will try and get in food and water and some other bits people have mentioned like stove and sleeping bags but again why would I need things like a sleeping bag and IDs if nothing crazy is going to happen and we will be in our homes this is why I think I’m so upset about it all it feels like there’s something deeper under the surface

@nahlaaaa you don't need a sleeping bag or stove. Just some food you can eat without cooking and extra duvets or clothes to keep warm in a power cut.

Pregnancy is naturally an anxiety inducing time. Try not to let yourself spiral. The government aren’t “expecting” all these things to happen, they just want us to be prepared just in case we lose power OR water OR ever need to evacuate our homes because of flooding or wildfires etc.

So they’ve given us this list to cover ALL eventualities. Seeing it all listed together can appear overwhelming - like they’re telling us that we’ll have no food or water, and banking will go down, and we’ll freeze, and we’ll all have to flee.

In reality, they’re not expecting us to be stricken by all or indeed, even one of those events but it’s better to be prepared just in case. Just like having insurance for your car. Chances are you won’t crash, but it’s best to prepare for the worst!

I’ve got loads of spare duvets so we’ll just wrap ourselves up in those. Others will use their sleeping bags. You can use anything really but it’s worth remembering that it gets really really cold with no heating.

You're over thinking. Look at the amount of people who have suffered from floods over the years. Bet they now keep sandbags and have amended storage to protect themselves from it happening again. You're advised to have warm blankets, snow shovel in the car if driving in heavy snow. My area has suffered with low/no water due to many leaks - we now make sure we have bottled water. A basic water & fireproof document box is useful - it holds all our key documents (passports etc) in one place and god forbid we ever had a fire (and water from firebrigade) we wouldn't have the agro of sorting out that key paperwork if we hadn't been able to grab it when leaving the house. Its no different to having smoke alarms, house alarms etc. No doubt you had your hospital bag packed and ready for going into labour. Its just about making life easier and being prepared.
