Will you allow me a little boast?

I've namechanged, as this might be identifying.

A little under two years ago, we lost beloved mum very suddenly. Before the ambulance came, two lovely first responders came to the house to help. There wasn't actually much that they could do for my mum, but they really helped the rest of us just by being there, and by being so lovely.

First responders are trained volunteers who help to provide emergency assistance while patients are waiting for an ambulance to get there. On the day her adored grandma died, my dd said that she wanted to train to become a first responder herself, so that something positive might come out of that awful day.

She has now completed her first responder training and she will be going out on her first shift very soon. She understands that she may or may not have the opportunity to save someone's life, but even if she can't, she knows that she might at least be able to bring a little comfort and reassurance to a family who are dealing with a traumatic event.

I'm so bloody proud of her. And I know my mum would be too.

So sorry you lost your dear mum but how wonderful that your DD has turned this loss into positive action. Indirectly your mum is the reason other people may now live.

I’d be boasting too! Well done to your daughter. I’m really sorry about your mum. The first responders who came out to my mum on the day she made what was to be her last trip to hospital were phenomenal.

That's really struck a chord with me. I am so happy to hear something positive came out of something so tragic.

Your daughter sounds epic ❤️ and yes your mum would have been so proud.

You'll never get over the sudden loss but at least it's been a catalyst for something good.

My mum died similarly 6 years ago, she collapsed at home and my poor dad and sibling had to perform CPR on her until paramedics arrived. Sadly it was too late and the emergency services couldn't revive her.

My sibling is now fully CPR trained, has encouraged us all to have basic first aid training and is lead first aider at the school they teach in.

It's important for healing to be able to take something positive from the very worst day of your life.

ShanghaiDiva · 22/10/2026 09:22

How wonderful! Your mum would no doubt be incredibly proud of your Dd!

PeachTrifle · 22/10/2026 09:38

Well done to her, that's a real achievement. You never know, she may get some maternity call-outs and get to play midwife.
