Why do plastic frames in SpecSavers cost so much?

Like £70-90 for a frame that seems no more sturdy and durable than poundland reading glasses.

... at least £130 if you want hinged arms and other subtle features.

The Lenses are EXTRA, many £££ extra.

But the frame... just why, how can it need to cost so much....?

Pffffftt... no option sounds reliably good.
I used to go to a local optician but moved far away and now live in big city. The options at local optician were also quite expensive.

I didn't care for the optician yesterday, he alone put me off ever going back.

I did fork out £££ for 2 prs ysterday though, I feel like I'm going to have to spend a lot of money no matter what to try out different options & eventually figure out how to get relative value for money.

I had a terrible experience with Specsavers recently, had some great frames for my occupational lenses which were still fine so I just wanted them reglazed with my new prescription. They wanted over £200 but if I got a new pair including frames it was half that!

So I took them elsewhere and got them reglazed for half that.

Rip off merchants. On the cheaper end Asda are much better. Plus they twice gave me incorrect varifocals, claiming I had an astigmatism when I didn't!

We've stopped going and now both get our glasses online including DH varifocals and prescription sunglasses for us both, very happy. Specsavers for us became too pushy and expensive the last two times we used them. We get our eyes tested where we choose, then take our prescription away to order online.

How do you get varifocals online? They do that thing where they mark your pupils on the lens when you get them in store, how does that work online?

My DM had a terrible experience with Specsavers. The manager was SO apologetic , he had even dealt with the situation himself so knew exactly why we complained and said he wasn't happy at all about what had happened ...

He was so annoyed at his team that he gave her a lovely Little specsavers paper bag with a "top quality" lens cloth and glasses cleaner and hoped that would make up for her having to wait a month for her glasses after spending £180 with them and being told to come back in a few days 3 times by the staff .

For that bit of gaslighting she won't be going back again after using them for many years.

She then saw a very similar pair of glasses in Vision express for half the price she had paid for hers whicg sealed the deal.

They are only allowed to charge a small fee for the eye test so they make up the money with frames. It’s a business.

But Specsavers also try and save by having very quick consultations. You’d be much better off going to an independent optician. They will take the time. Opticians sometimes pick up on serious conditions. And you can go back for adjustments etc. I wouldn’t use an online or discount optician for this reason.

tell me about it, my varifocals were £208!!! 2 years ago

Mine were £536 last year from Vision Express! I absolutely hated them so I returned them and got my usual two pairs (one reading, one distance) and altogether they were half the price of one pair of varifocals. They must carve those lenses out of fossilised unicorn tears or something.
