Need ideas for what to read

I haven't read a book for pleasure since I read the folk of the farway tree as a child ..I have absolutely no idea what I like ..
Sometimes on social media mini stories pop up ,like I was reading one about a nurse who got locked out by her dad and she slept in her car in the snow ,and one where the DH and mil were planning to take the pregnant mums baby talking in their language, not knowing she understood it ...but you never get the ending..
I guess it held my interest enough to read the page .
I have ADHD ,so i lose interest very quickly
Going on a long train journey,so it's good time to start a book ,and not buy the usual trashy magazines I get ..,..but don't really enjoy
So .,.if you are reading a book ,or have read a book that you absolutely loved ,can you recommend it and let me know a bit about it ,but no spoilers please

What's it about ,what is there to feel uncomfortable about

It’s about a woman, Eleanor, she works in finance in Scotland. She’s extremely isolated and drinks. She is very intelligent but socially awkward. But she thinks she’s absolutely fine… the book slowly reveals how what she thinks contrasts with how others see her, her troubled past, and she makes a friend. She isn’t fine.

Sorry I’m trying not to do spoilers!

That does sound interesting I will see if I can get it second hand

Oh no! Have you got a library or some local charity shops you could try so that you can do some reading this weekend?

JustaSongAboutPingPong · 23/10/2026 08:21

And I’ve just thought of another book that you might like and it’s only 68 pages. It’s The Answer Is No by Fredrik Backman. Loved this short novella when I read it a couple of months ago.

Lucyslateagain · 23/10/2026 08:40

I've just ordered the eloner book .£3.25:
Arrives Monday
I've bought everything second hand in case I don't get on with one ,so I'm not wasting to much money

Second hand is the way to go with books! Charity shops are my main hunting ground. There's only one author I'll buy new and that's Sarah Waters.

If you’re able to, check your local library. You can usually sign up online and most have apps you can download to your phone / tablet so you can read on that. Also, some libraries do book sales every so often where you can buy books v cheaply.

I loved the Eleanor Oliphant book by the way. Enjoy!

You can get kindle e-books for about that price and start reading them immediately. They have many that are free too, though they tend to be the classics.

It may be an idea to get an audiobook with the actual book on kindle / audible. So if you loose interest in actually reading you can still enjoy the story. Agree with others that a young adult type thing is a good start. You can’t go far wrong with Harry Potter

I loved My Friends by Fredrik Backman. It's about a young care leaver who falls in love with a painting and, after a chance encounter, ends up befriending someone who gradually reveals the story of how it came to be painted. Wonderful book.

I have about 30 books at home all brand new ( self help types ) never opened 😭
A kindle would feel a betrayal to them and an expensive purchase in case I didn't get on with that either
The list of suspicious things has arrived
So hopefully I can make a start

Kevin and Sadie in Ireland..I loved those books
I think there was three ..
I remember a TV programme, break in the sun ..that might be a book as well ..
Maybe it's a bit sad reading children's books though

You don't need a Kindle to read Kindle e-books. The Kindle phone app is free, so is a cheap way to give it a go.

I take your point about betrayal to your physical books. I sometimes feel the same. But it's balanced against the convenience of always having a book to hand, e.g. when waiting for a bus, or standing shoulder to shoulder on a packed train.

I did not know that
I will see if my phone has the app

You'll be able to download it from your app store for sure.

Another thing I like about e-books is that if it's the sort of book with lots of characters and you find it hard to keep tabs on who is who, you can easily search back on a word or name, then return to your place in the book.

The List of Suspicious Things is good.
If you enjoy things like Call The Midwife, Dear Mrs Bird is a good one, a young woman who becomes an agony aunt during the war.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will have to add that one to my list.

I’ve also read Anxious People this year which was brilliant.

I'm reading that now, for the second time. I like it.

HRTQueen · 24/10/2026 16:07

Two books that get you into the story very quickly

Anxious People by Frederick Backman it’s funny and touching very enjoyable and an easy read (there is a criminal element but told in a very funny way)

American Dirt by Jeanne Cummins might be a bit hard going but you are from the very first paragraph caught up in the story and it’s fast moving maybe one for when are a back into reading

I often have the book on audio and kindle (it’s my extravagance) and listen/read the book on my phone or kindle. I have found it helpful at time to read and listen at the same time so I am not distracted 😁 This really helped me get back into reading (have adhd) and with some books I become totally engrossed like I used to (which is so enjoyable one of life’s simple pleasures)

Agree with Anxious People. You sort of fall into the story from the first page and it cracks on at a good pace.

I'm on my 3rd Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey fame) book. Love them, full of twists.
