Manager has refused my time off 'request'

MyBossIsAPillock · 19/10/2026 12:17

I emailed him 6 weeks ago to inform him that I won't be in next week and the week after. He's just told me that my request is rejected. He says it's half term so others have already booked the time off and I'm taking the piss even asking seeing as I've barely been in this year.

Things is, the reason I've been off so much is because I've had breast cancer. The reason I won't be in for the next 2 weeks is because I'll be having radiotherapy.

I told him it wasn't a request and that I wouldn't be in. He said that then it'll become a disciplinary matter. Fuckwit. I'm not worried, HR and senior management have been excellent throughout. But what a twattish way to treat someone going through hell.

Was your manager aware of the reason you are out on sick leave / medical consultations?

JHound · 19/10/2026 15:40

MyBossIsAPillock · 19/10/2026 12:25

He knows. He just thinks he can do what he likes. Years ago he refused time off for jury service. Said he knew the law but he doesn't work that way. HR disagreed with him. I think he's an employment tribunal waiting to happen.

Ok forget my question. He’s just a fuckwit.

As I say, it' a him problem not a company one. If I tell HR they'll crucify him. The HR manager went through it herself, she understands better than anyone.

Please do report him
He needs his arse handing to him and line management responsibility removed

Raise a grievance. Keep emails.

Treehorns · 19/10/2026 15:50

You need to email HR with this interaction with him.
Quote him, word for word.
Request that it be held in your file formally.

This has a very serious Grievance written all over it.
Wishing you well.

Ilikewinter · 19/10/2026 15:54

I'm genuinely lost for words! If you can be bothered defo go to HR. I hope your treatment goes well.

Namemechangey · 19/10/2026 15:55

He has played this excellently… for you to take him to the cleaners. I hope you have all your correspondence saved, if not forward everything to your personal
rmail asap, screen shots of teams chats etc. Do it now, deal with it when you get back. I hope your treatment goes ok. I also hope you get some good compensation from this.

GintyMcGinty · 19/10/2026 15:58

What an arsehole. Sorry you have to put up with that shit.

Hope the treatment goes well

SemperIdem · 19/10/2026 15:59

This is shocking, honestly HR need to be informed so they can deal with him appropriately. He isn’t fit to lead a team.

I hope your treatment goes well.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/10/2026 16:01

He is horrifying I hope he is fired. I’m glad you have a supportive hr dept and wishing you a healthy recovery xx

MyBossIsAPillock · 19/10/2026 16:09

Thank you for all your supportive replies. I'm feeling rather overwhelmed by the compassion of strangers (compared to this wazzock).

Hi all, I don’t want to derail the thread but having undergoing chemo / rt for bc I am also just going through some things. I didn’t even realise “disability leave” was a thing. I have used all my company sick pay, can someone explain to me more clearly - disability leave may be eligible but not all
companies do it, is that correct? I’m learning so much from this thread for myself lurking in the background so thanks all. And Op, I’m so sorry you’re going through this your work sound so absolutely shit and you need to be supported, please go to HR. Don’t even engage with your boss he sounds like a knob.

We’re getting a very one sided opinion from someone who is very emotional. I wouldn’t be jumping to conclusions.

Oh piss off. He knows she has cancer and he's being a prick. What other side do you need?

GCAcademic · 19/10/2026 16:17

Why on earth aren't you escalating this to HR?

His. You piss off. Two sides to every story. OP has been vague and hasn’t clarified timings of what was said when. Plenty of people on here are asking for similar clarification which hasn’t been given.

My company didn’t offer it. I bloody begged, asked could we relook at the policy etc as I was down to SSP but they wouldn’t budge on it. But it’s absolutely worth checking! My friend who also had cancer is a teacher and she had a year off entirely down as disability leave, didn’t affect her sick leave entitlement at all.

Booboobagins · 19/10/2026 16:22

Firstly, praying radiotherapy is successful. that new injection might be next - it's been a huge succes 🙏

Secondly, your manager is a DH. You will be on sick leave, so f him.

I once had a manager who complained I was off a lot when pregnant with my DD. High risk pregnancy so half day off every week in clinic. I had to be there at 1pm and never got seen ever before 4.30pm. Hospitalised 4/5 times. I ignored the DH. Suggest you do the same with your DH manager too.

Sending hugs 🫂

She clearly said she told him the time off is for radiotherapy. She doesn't need to 'request' it from him, she's entitled to it. Timings don't matter.

IzzyGone · 19/10/2026 16:23

as if you're not going to go for treatment for breast cancer - as he said you cna't

he needs to get real ffs

can you put in a grievance ?

TeenLifeMum · 19/10/2026 16:23

I’d reply “I’ll provide a doctors note but wanted to give you as much notice as possible. I’ve cc’d in HR who can confirm if any other paperwork needs to be completed.”

That’s the kind of thing my manager used to do but she’s a lot better now - I’m sure someone had a word as she used to panic if you asked for half a day off.

Sherararara · 19/10/2026 16:23

Tryagain26 · 19/10/2026 14:57

She told him she wouldn't be in because she was having radiotherapy. She didn't ask for leave.

She hasn’t clarified when she told him that. It certainly doesn’t read like she told him that
at the time of requesting the AL. If she did and the reasons for the request were clear from the get go then fine. All points are justified. But if she didn’t, and only made it clear after the leave was denied, then she is on less firm ground. Details matter.

She didn't request Annual leave, do keep up

HR are there to protect the company and the company alone.

Of course timings matter. As a manager you have to plan around the absence. If she escalates to HR and it comes out she didn’t mention the reasons in the initial request and it only came out later then it won’t look great. HR will likely come down in the middle and say both parties need to communicate better.
