Hi! Are we still hanging washing outside at this time of year?
im in a first floor flat with a communal garden. It doesn’t get the sun. I have been hanging washing outside but seem to be the only one in the block
doing so.
it doesn’t get completely dry but a bit
is anyone else?

I hang mine out all year round(obviously not in pouring rain). It smells so much better for being outside and then if not fully dry I pop it on the airer overnight.

i had 8 loads out at the weekend and they were all 90% dry when I took them in. I prefer the smell when I hang them out even if they don’t dry. I’ll keep hanging mine out as long as it’s not damp/raining!

I hung some washing out at the weekend, if I get it out early enough it dries. Can't do it in the week any more as by the time I'm home from work the sun is off it and it's started to get damp again. There's no way I'm hanging all my laundry up twice, so unless it's going to dry enough to go straight in the airing cupboard, I'll just hang indoors instead.

Ive got a tumble dryer.

So have I but still always hang it out unless it’s raining.

I hung my bedding out yesterday, it wasn’t completely dry but I put it on my maiden last night and it will be dry by the time
i get home from work

Hello fellow communal garden person. I did hang some out at the weekend as it was a lovely blue sky day but will stop when the clocks change except for the occasional woolly thing if the weather is fine - after October its generally too damp (Scotland) though I might occasionally out a woolly jumper out if at home. Generally washing goes out April - October dependent on weather / neighbours.

ChapmanFarm · 19/10/2026 12:25

Yes. I got three loads dried yesterday.

I'm the mad person still pegging out with snow on the ground.

My garden is n-e facing but long compared to house and near the sea so it's rare for there not to be some kind of breeze.

It is often drier than you think in the winter but obviously if you have a fully enclosed space in complete shadow the effort to pegging makes less sense.

Leoie · 19/10/2026 12:30

I try to put it out for as long as possible but I live up north. With the clocks changing on Sunday I don't think I'll get many more opportunities before next year.

Yes if it’s not raining, but I have a west facing garden. I usually stop when the clocks change because by the time the machine has finished there just aren’t enough hours of daylight for it to dry (especially as on my work days I usually can’t get it out before lunchtime).

Does your machine not have a timer? I set ours for 6am so not overnight but earlier than I'd manage to get it in while getting up and ready.

I need to switch back to doing this now the days are getting shorter.

As another general tip (not meant in response to this post), it's also useful to consider whether a temporary winter line might work in your garden. While you don't want to give over the best sitting space to laundry in summer, if it's not being used in the same way now then a pull out line of whirly can be good. We put a rotary drier in a heavy patio umbrella stand so it can go where the sun is.

silverbirches · 19/10/2026 12:47

It smells much nicer if you hang washing outside, even if it doesn't dry much.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 19/10/2026 12:51

Mine was our by 10am its dry and im going to get it in when I can be bothered to get up.
If the ground is dry my washing dries

GloriousAutumnLeaves · 19/10/2026 13:07

I’ve given up now!
Had 2 lines of bedding and towels out on the weekend, but despite being out from 9am til just before dusk, it was stil feeling a bit damp so ended up tumbling it just so I could put it away. Gutted, really… it’s always a sad October day when I give up as getting washing out and dried and put away ( or back on to the
bed 💕) is an absolute joy for me!

Nothing going out now til February🙁

The sun doesn’t get high enough to really shine on the washing now, and clocks change on Saturday night, so the pegs are going for their winter rest!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 19/10/2026 13:57

I have some out at the moment and I will continue to put it out it out on days that are bright and breezy.
Where I live everyone has decent sized gardens but even in the summer hardly anyone hangs their washing out. I just don’t understand why.

Skyflymom · 19/10/2026 14:15

Nope. In fact I put my rotary airer in the garage for its winter break yesterday. It's always damp still even after being out all day and I haven't got the time to be in and out watching for showers. If it's not tumble dryer safe it gets hung on hangers in the bathroom overnight to dry

MintTwirl · 19/10/2026 17:14

Just got mine inside m, it’s just a little bit damp so it’s going on the airer and will be fully dry later. It smells so nice and fresh!

We don’t have a tumble dryer and I do think it makes a difference towards line drying. I couldn’t cope with having it all indoor drying all of tile tine, I hate having washing drying inside, it would be never ending as there are 5 of us,

alexdgr8 · 19/10/2026 17:22

Do it only when you are there to attend to it.
Don't go out.
Hang it out as early as possible.
It's the wind that dries it more than sun esp at this time of year.
Turn it after an hour or 2.
Keep a close look out for clouds.
Get used to observing which way the weather comes.
Note the sunset the night before.
Red sky at night...
Plan ahead.
Keep hanging out.
It's good for the soul.

PrettyLittleRose · 19/10/2026 17:38

I'm still hanging out washing... Not got a lot of sun in my back garden at the moment, and it's been a bit chilly-ish, but also it's been breezy (12-13 mph breeze) so my washing was two thirds dry within 4-5 hours. It's now draped around the house finishing drying off (and it will dry as my house is cosy and warm.)
