  1. Clean/clear up as you go

  2. Live alone

EveningSpread · 18/10/2026 23:25

Yes I work full time and sacrifice time to keep it clean.

I constantly clean things. Eg while the kettle is boiling I’ll take the bin out, wipe the surfaces and sweep/wipe the floor.

Always make sure the kitchen is clean before going to bed.

It still builds up, not everything gets done all the time and I don’t always get time for a big clean at weekends, which can be just as busy as the week. But house is never dirty.

Dragononawagon · 18/10/2026 23:25

Clear up as you go.
Reset to zero each night before bed.

HowTheLight · 18/10/2026 23:37

Have a cleaner. I was not put on earth to sacrifice anything on the altar of cleanliness.

SometimesThingsHappen · 18/10/2026 23:40

I have a cleaner come once a week.
My family (including myself and hubby) have assigned chores.
If you cook, you clean the kitchen after. Dishwasher should be done daily (my teenager who is responsible for this job doesn't agree, so it's a battle, but a battle that i will keep having).
Our house isn't perfect but it's livable.

Nottodaybob · 18/10/2026 23:53

Having a clean home is a priority to me, so I prioritise it over other stuff (namely kids homework and going to the gym/ exercise classes.

If I didn't value it and like it, I would be able to prioritise it.

Lambsydaisy · 18/10/2026 23:59

We split the chores between us. I prefer to do a little bit at a time through the week, 10-15 mins in the mornings or evenings, and on a WFH day I'll do the washing. DH prefers to do all his stuff at the weekend, except the dishwasher and wiping down the kitchen which he does daily.
I do a bit on the weekend too, but it's always small chunks of time, no big time chunks are needed because I'm picking off chores all the time.

Gabitule · 19/10/2026 00:01

I used to sacrifice time at the weekend (1/4 of my weekends) but I decided that my weekends feel too short even without me spending a good chunk of them cleaning. So I now fit the cleaning on the days I work from home, e.g wake up a bit earlier in the morning and hoover the house before I start work. Clean the kitchen in my lunch break and then just eat lunch while working. I ocassionally suggest phone meetings instead of video meetings and I can do the dusting when on the phone. Every free minute I get is an opportunity to clean something. I used to tell myself that I’d clean the house in the evening after work but, by the time it gets to evening, I’m simply too tired to do much.

rollyto · 19/10/2026 00:09

Having a lovely ordered home
is important to me so, like @EveningSpread I tackle it as I go. I never leave a room without straightening it out, I do the kitchen after every meal, I keep it all in good order. I do have a cleaner for 4 hours once a week too.

Overherelikeeeyore · 19/10/2026 00:13

Working from home is massive for me. In my breaks/lunch I do a lot of jobs which means I don’t have anything left to do at the weekend really.

GreenLeaf25 · 19/10/2026 00:19

Raised children who are great at keeping clean and tidy. I clean as I go and do a clean every weekend.

Everything has a place and it goes back there before I go to bed

NeverLooksFlippingClean · 19/10/2026 06:04

Sleep! That's my sacrifice.
I get up at 4.45am during the week to give myself time to clean before I start work at 8am.

Veraandacupoftea · 19/10/2026 06:35

I do 35 h and dh does 50 plus

our house is not tidy/ clean enough

every Sunday I do a big kitchen reset and clean out the Guinea pig.

try and keep on top of the lounge every day

make sure I do two wash loads in the week so I don’t end up swamped.

I feel a bit fed up with it all . Dh is not very good at cleaning up after himself, but does do things if asked

it’s half term next week and we are decorating the hall and having a new carpet, so I’m hoping that helps me feel a bit better about the house and encourages me a bit

cityliving99 · 19/10/2026 06:42

I work full time and am unable to work from home. Therefore I sacrifice a lot of personal time to clean. Not only that, but every Saturday I clean my father’s house and do his laundry. I organise his Tesco delivery and after I have finished I go and do our food shop. Its not great, that’s for sure.

I feel exhausted just reading that. I hope you get a break soon.

I currently work 4 days a week but am contemplating going back to 5 as my youngest is in secondary and I want to up my pension contributions and income but I do a LOT of household tasks on my day off and I’m worried about the change. This thread is not making me feel better as I don’t wfh.

TheChosenTwo · 19/10/2026 07:00

we have a cleaner and I also wfh a couple of days a week so I can keep on top of washing.
One trap I don’t want to fall into though is working a full time job and sacrificing my own breaks to domestic chores - dh and dc also live here too and are also responsible for keeping the house nice and tidy so although I don’t mind unloading the dishwasher or putting a load of washing on and hanging it out, I do use my lunch breaks for things that are just for me.
Dont want anyone else thinking that just because I’m home, i’ll pick up all the slack. I’m actually working when I’m at home!

Words · 19/10/2026 07:04

A cleaner. And try to tidy/ put away as you go.

pulpJarvis · 19/10/2026 07:04

Cleaner once a week. On the times we haven’t had one it has been difficult to keep on top of bathrooms and hoovering. My DH is very tidy, always cleans the kitchen up so come down to a clean kitchen.

it’s not perfect but it’s tidy. Also we don’t have huge anoints of stuff….

violetcuriosity · 19/10/2026 07:13

Robot hoover on every night after dinner, house reset on Sunday mornings x

pulpJarvis · 19/10/2026 07:14

Yes to robot hoover, but you do have to have a tidy floor already and keep the hoover clean…

FlatCatYellowMat · 19/10/2026 07:15

My house is a lot better now that I have upstairs and downstairs robot hoovers, so that job doesn't need to be done by me very often at all, then I got ruthless and chucked stuff so the sides in the kitchen stay clear (I find it breeds if you let a couple of things sit there, by the end of the week it will be covered) so I can wipe them down easily rather than having to tidy first.

Then I do the dishwasher first thing, so dirty stuff can go straight in, and I've been much more strict on meal planning so the fridge doesn't get over-stuffed and filthy. Laundry baskets in each room, and a rail so that nothing's sitting around in heaps/baskets waiting for the machine/to be folded and put away.

The number 1 thing was the decluttering though - the house is so much easier to clean when you don't have to pick stuff up first.

Pallaska · 19/10/2026 07:21

I pay for a cleaner. I don't have clutter. I have a robot hoover/mop, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer. That takes care of almost all cleaning. I just fill/empty various machines.

Nomorewino · 19/10/2026 07:26

Id like to know too. I have way too much stuff which makes cleaning hard work.

Blueandgreencoloursflashing · 19/10/2026 07:30

If you have a weekly cleaner, don't you still have to clean the kitchen after every meal Does your kitchen floor only need mopping once a week? Floor vacuumed, toilet bowl and sinks don't need cleaning inbetween cleaner's visit?

Genuine question as we have to mop kitchen floor daily because the the bastard dogs!

MrsClattenburg · 19/10/2026 07:31

One of us does a big clean on a Friday afternoon, I finish work and can't settle until I know the dusting/hoovering has been done and the bathroom is clean. I'd hate to have a cleaner so I'm happy to sacrifice a couple of hours a week.

Like others, I also keep on top of everything by wiping surfaces down and sweeping the kitchen every day, tidying as I go. DH does too but is definitely not as bothered as I am to have everything in its place!
