Are you happy/content?

I recently came across a YouTube account where a lady visits various cities and asks random strangers if they are happy or not?

I appreciate that happiness is an emotion so one is hardly likely to be permanently happy throughout their lives but right now, right here are you happy? Are you very content?

Most of the time.

I enjoy my job, I love my children who are very easy (and adult!) and I spent a couple of house in one of my happy places today - the garden centre. Where I spent a wonderful few hours sending dh photos of what I "definitely" was buying so I could turn the front garden into Narnia for Christmas.
I actually got some rechargeable lights for the front garden, some weed killer and bulbs for the back garden and cleared the pond out.

And I have a piece of cheese to eat and a can of coke to drink. Life is good 😁

I’m blessed with some phenomenal children & good friends, so yes.
But I’m seriously ill & will be for ever, which has taken much of my quality of life away. Living vicariously has its limits. So on that basis, no.

NoSmilingNoWrinkles · 17/10/2026 18:01

Yes, definitely. I have everything I need and more. I certainly count my blessings.

Ragnarok26 · 17/10/2026 18:06

When I'm not at work? Yes, mostly.

When I'm at work? God almighty what micromanaging circle of hell am I in?!

mizu · 17/10/2026 18:12

@keepswimming38 oh this made me almost cry, you are right, all that life missed…….

I am very content. Live alone (separated and almost divorced), 2 DDs at uni, job I love and have done for many years with a great team and have a lovely little place (albeit with a mortgage until I retire since I bought exH out) that is on the edge of fabulous countryside. I do not earn a huge amount but I eat well, I have a warm house and I can travel in the hols if I want.

tripleginandtonic · 17/10/2026 18:13

On the whole yes, I'm content and sometimes happy

Kangarude · 17/10/2026 18:18

Yes, I’m very happy and content.
I have known some very hard times, but I got through them.
My family are all well, I have a wide circle of friends, a husband I still adore after 37 years, and a job I love.
I consider myself extremely fortunate

I’ve just been thinking about a school friend that died on a motorcycle at 17. I’m 59 now. All the life he never experienced. I feel lucky.

So sorry to hear about your friend.
I lost a friend very young and feel the same about all the life I've had that she hasn't. It makes me appreciate and make the most of every moment even when times are hard.

Mountainlover26 · 18/10/2026 12:21

Yes - had such a nice weekend of a family walk in the gorgeous Autumn sun yesterday and a catch up with friends this morning. Nothing has cost much and I feel very happy and content. Even with all the usual jobs/ironing to catch up on for the rest of the day, I feel very lucky in life.

jotex · 18/10/2026 13:06

For the most part yes, though a bit lonely.

dustysidetable · 18/10/2026 13:10

Yes, I’m much happier than I ever thought I could be.

NurseRunner · 18/10/2026 13:37

No. But then I was diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder a few years ago, so I guess that’s to be expected 🤷🏻‍♀️

Charlenedickens · 18/10/2026 13:45

Yes, I am happily married, have a wonderful relationship with my daughter, am shortly going to take early retirement in a couple of weeks at 57 years old, am financially comfortable and have a lovely home, I am healthy and happy.

I’ve had rhe stereotypical big corp career, which came with many rewards but many stresses, I’m so excited to retire, people ask me all the time, but what will you do, and for fne life of me I can’t understand why it’s the first question people ask.

its like they think work is the be all and end all, that I will sit and watch tv or something, no I will get up when I please, have a leisurely coffee, go to the gym, spend as much time as I wish in there, have long showers and pamper myself, I will potter in the garden, go out for lunch, go to the cinema to see a matinee and have a glass of wine, go for day trips to different places, have many long weekends away with my husband, spend time visiting family and friends, and no one, but no one can ever tell me what to do, stress me out, or give me a deadline to work to again, my life will be my own to enjoy with those I love, doing what makes me happy.

HoppityBun · 18/10/2026 13:47

I have times when I’m overtaken by momentary joy. But usually I’m mildly anxious and tired.

Same here. Diagnosed with clinical depression, anxiety and adhd. I’d love to feel happy but would gladly settle with contentment but it is what it is I suppose.

No, but I’m mid forties and almost at the bottom of the bell curve of happiness. I am very upbeat about the idea of my sixties. But right now is a very hard a slog already and I know I’ve got the ill health/ death of my parents ahead of me to handle (only child)

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 18/10/2026 17:36

About 75% happy

TheTwerkingDuchessOfMonteshitshow · 18/10/2026 18:12

Yes. I’m happy and content. It’s a good place to be at 68 and I feel surrounded by love. Love really is what makes my world go round. Loving my children and grandchildren with the bonus of being loved back.

Getting older has so much going for it. I think I’m the best version of myself I’ve ever been.

eta - i am medicated for anxiety following cancer that caused me to have a complete breakdown. It’s only a small amount of medicine but I think it’s important to acknowledge it so other people don’t think everything is rosy in everyone’s garden except there’s. I’m also the carer to my 35 year old severely disabled son. I do have a team of carers helping me with him and again I’m only telling people about this part of me so people don’t think that being happy and content means having a perfect worry free life. And there’s more but that will never be for here.

Koriko · 18/10/2026 18:30

After I quit my job I'm on cloud nine. Ask me again in a year though...

bearinthebigbluespouse · 18/10/2026 18:31

Yes, even when I'm not having a good time, I'm still basically happy. I'm actually allergic to being miserable I think - I just can't keep it up.

Forkbangles · 18/10/2026 20:08

Very, yes.

I have been lucky in life and I can’t really believe it.

Timeforachange26 · 18/10/2026 20:12

Yes most definitely

DaisyChain505 · 18/10/2026 20:16

Yes I’m happy. Not all day every day but even if I’m in a low mood or something negative/bad happens I’m able to try and find the positive in a day or to remind myself how lucky I am to live the life I lead.

Im not rich, I drive a 15 year old car, and I don’t live in the most desirable area but I am so grateful for my health, my friends, my family, my husband.

I appreciate the small things in life and remind myself often how lucky I am to live in a relatively safe country compared to many others in the world.

There is always something to be thankful for.

Mathsbabe · 18/10/2026 20:17

Yes. I'm almost always happy.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 18/10/2026 20:20

Yes very much so. Tired but happy.
