Wouldn't it be some much better for kids to be stuck at home on screen rather that out, engaging with their community, and having fun? 🙄

Or doing a sport they loved 3 nights a week….more like

It’s always such a good atmosphere where I live. People only go to decorated houses and my children and friends always have a little party with games etc (even as they’re getting a bit older) and then go out trick or treating in a group. Lots of smiles all round.

People are good at only going to houses that have pumpkins around here and loads of houses completely decorate, have games outside their houses etc. Feels like a real community evening.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/10/2026 09:00

Yes I’ve noticed decorations going up earlier and our whole office has been decorated lol with a competition. I don’t mind it. I think the costumes are a bit of pantomime and escapism but I do think it’s gone a bit Xmas

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 17/10/2026 09:08

Don't engage with it then OP.
Lock your gate, pull the curtains, put the kettle on.
Or go to the cinema and watch something peaceful.

It's what I do and it's like it's not happening.

We love Halloween in my house. Soon, we will go out for pumpkins and carve them together and dress the house. I cannot wait, it signals a lovely period for us as a family, cosy autumn weather, my son’s bday, Halloween and parties, fireworks and then the lovely lead up to Christmas. The best time of year.

Not all kids are sporty.

But fwiw I agree with you on the horror/slasher element. When our kids were little I insisted it had to be wholesome story book type costumes - witches, ghosts, pumpkins, skeletons etc Nothing gory.

Has anyone mentioned 'begging for sweets' yet?

I think you're the first.

user293948849167 · 17/10/2026 11:59

Ah I actually love Halloween. Even the tacky decorations! I think “murder house” ones are verging into inappropriate….but also can’t help liking it!
It is only one night after all, lights off and don’t answer the door if you don’t want to take part.

Don't mention fireworks 🙈 you'll start the they should be banned brigade early!!

Pinkissmart · 17/10/2026 12:41

Well don’t do it then, OP.

It’s just a fun thing for kids. Unless you’re religious, do you get upset about Easter and Christmas?

You think it's "fun" for young children to dress up as serial killers or murder victims?
That's the part the OP was saying she didn't like (and I don't like either personally).
Halloween can be a lot of fun - I just wish the slasher horror style wasn't part of it.

Yes I've seen some ghosts and zombies but mostly cute little witches or vampires.
It's very cute we love it
It was one of my favourite nights of the year.
Mine are too old to go now. I will however continue to dress the house up for a bit and "give back " as it where ! Giving out sweets for a few more years

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 17/10/2026 12:52

@Needmorelego agree , I've never gone for that side of things ,gentle primative Halloween here !

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 17/10/2026 12:53

To be fair I've not really seen much of that around my way though it's all cute and gentle.

We don't take part. Our daughter is 25 and lives away. Even when she was an age to participate in the begging shite we discouraged it.
Currently, living alone. No pumpkin, don't even fucking try your luck

Aren't you a barrel of laughs

It's not begging if people have bought sweets specifically for trick or treaters. I love seeing how happy the little kiddies are when they get to pick a treat.

Bigreddog25 · 17/10/2026 14:55

It's just fun. People like to have fun

gummywitch · 17/10/2026 15:57

Love love love it! Always fill the house to the brim with Halloween decs, props, ghosts, ghouls, pumpkins etc. As all the DC grown up now, i do it for the GDCs. They're the perfect age (3 -9) to enjoy the dressing up, a proper childrens Halloween party - plus i get to chase them around the garden with my broomstick, cackle cackle😉

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 17/10/2026 16:06

We're away this year but I've made up little bags for the three little boys in our square. Nothing fancy just pencils and haribo.

Our traditional dinner was potatoes, sausages and turnip after it had been hollowed out and homemade apple tart after. I loved Halloween as a child. DS and I went to a local ghost story event a few weeks ago it was brilliant.
