Front door or back if you have one? And why?

We have never used our front door, always the back door and I think it's more common to do so but looking at my neighbours, they all use the front door. Our driveway is to the side of the house so when unloading the car it's easier to go round the back as that's the kitchen side.

All who visit us, come to the back door too, there isn't even a door bell as it's a patio door so they just knock or see us through the glass.

Using the front door would feel abnormal now!

It was always the back door in the house I grew up in, but since I’ve been here
( 23 years) it’s always the front as the back is very secure and you can’t get in from outside, unless I go & open it.

I quite liked the back / kitchen door arrangement as it meant the rest of the house stayed cleaner, now everyone trails through with boots, coats, bags etc 😡

purplecorkheart · 16/10/2026 09:30

Front door in our house. You would have to mess about with unlocking a gate to use the back. In my Grandparents house it was always the back door.

Must admit I thought that when I first read the title! I thought Center Parcs was the code to use the back door from a previous thread on here.

I suppose it depends on where your pampas grass is planted.

We have two back doors and a front door. If I want to go in the house I tend to use whichever one is closest to where I am.

That is the good thing about coming in through the side door - ours goes into the kitchen. No crap and mud and the like gets dragged through the house.

Yes, this!
it drives me mad if im honest, i really miss using the back but theres no way we could. We’ve made it really secure and only use it for the wheely bins, but the traipsing crap through the house does my head in!🙄

Mid terrace here so definitely the front door!

Right?

It’s such a weird question to me because it really depends on the layout of your house.

tealandteal · 16/10/2026 09:39

Front door, in order to get to the back door I would have to walk past the front door, round the side of the house and into the back door. Both doors open into the same hallway that runs through the house so no benefit. We used the front door at my last house as well, the neighbours had a back gate so they exclusively used the patio doors as they could go from the drive through the gate to the doors. We never fancied fitting a gate so always walked from our drive round to the front of the house.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 16/10/2026 09:50

Always used the front door.

The back door is, erm, at the back of the house … so you cannot access it due to a locked garden gate. This is the norm where I live - the back door is for access the rear/side of the house (the gardens and bin store).

Mydogisagentleman · 16/10/2026 10:02

Both

Newcybrown · 16/10/2026 10:12

Agree eith PP all depends on layout doesn't it. I have never used a back door in any house ive lived in but know many who do.

Im a semi detached and would have to go through 2 gates to get to my back door which is just pointless when my front doors right there and you reach it first.
Any house before this one a back door was only accessible from already being inside the house or the back garden which you cant access from the street anyway.

ithinkthereforeyouarewrong · 16/10/2026 10:14

Front door but the back garden has a locked gate and backs on to other gardens. My sisters house the back door is more accessible so everyone uses it.

Growing up my mother's friend had a superstition that you couldn't enter and leave by the same door. So we went in the front but left by the back door, fumbling our way through the garden in the dark 😅

My Mum had the opposite superstition. You should leave by the same door you arrived by. But if you’ve sat down in between you can leave by the opposite door. No idea where that comes from!

mindutopia · 16/10/2026 13:14

We don’t have a front or back door. We have a kitchen door, a door that sort of leads into a hall and into the lounge, and a door that leads into a hall that leads to the utility/boiler room.

None of them are on the front of the house! Two are on the back, one is on the side.

The kitchen door is our main door. No one ever uses the one into the lounge. Only the kids use the side door when they are trying to sneak ice lollies from the chest freezer or when dh needs to get something from the utility room in muddy boots.

Dh has this weird thing though where the side of the house with the door is the front. 🙄 So like I’d call the front of the house the part you see looking at it from the road/drive. But Dh calls that the back. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The front to him is the side that faces the back garden because the front of the house is where the door you use most often is. Even though it’s the back of the house.

He is forever like, I need to go around the back of the house to pick that thing up off the road! And even the kids are like, don’t you mean the front?! 🤣 It’s because MIL calls the back of her house, the bit that faces her garden, the front, and the bit that faces the road, the back and Dh simply cannot shake lose of this tyranny from his childhood!

Haven't read the full thread but isn't this what the sex topic is for?

GintyMcGinty · 16/10/2026 13:17

Doesn't it depend on how your house is laid out?

kiakoa · 16/10/2026 13:23

I have never lived anywhere where there is easy access to a back door, you would have to walk through a side gate or go to the back of a house & then through a fence door to enter the garden to reach the back door.

hairyhaggisgreen · 16/10/2026 13:47

We do have a gate you need to go through to get to the back door, it's on a latch so not difficult to open. It can be locked from the inside but we never lock it now the children are much older.

it feels odd to use the front door now as we've always used the back.

our last house the back door opened into the utility room so we always used it too to take off mucky boots etc

Front if I’m driving
Back if I’ve got muddy feet

gingangirly · 16/10/2026 14:35

Front, because otherwise you’d have to get through the gate. When we move it will be front, or through gate, through door into garage, through door into utility, through door into kitchen. Why would you do that?

Erin1975 · 16/10/2026 14:38

We have a front door and a side door. We always use the front door when going to work in the morning, or when coming back from work in the evening, but at all other times we use the side door. If we were to go out in the evening we would both use the side door.

There is no logic to this behaviour, it just seems to be something we have done for years.

sherbetlemonade · 16/10/2026 14:48

Front door. The back door leads only into the garden and our gate is bolted.

Seagulldancing · 16/10/2026 14:50

When my parking space was at the back of my house, I always used the back door, as did family and close friends. My country relatives only use the back door, Ive never been in the front door of some houses in 50 years.

nuttymut · 16/10/2026 14:57

Depends on your layout . We use the front door, unless we’re dog walking then we use a side door into the garage , remove boots , coats and dry the dog and then a door from the garage into the kitchen .
My sister lives in the country and every one uses her back door which leads into a boot room . I’ve never seen her front door used .

Isn't that a bit of a fire risk? Are you in a flat?

In a flat, yes. Supposed to be compartmentalized but I'm not convinced.
