Teacher sacked after expressing personal view on Israel and abortion in class

A teacher joined the school in October 2024 as a French teacher and Year 10 tutor

She was covering history. The topic was the bombing of Dresden. She also asked whether similar moral issues surrounded the current Israel-Palestine conflict, in an attempt to engage the class.

In response to a student’s question, Ms Meston affirmed that she was “pro-Israel”, but lamented the deaths of innocent people in Gaza caught up in the conflict

A student asked her whether she was “pro-abortion”, to which she responded that she was “pro-life”.

Asked to elaborate on her position, Ms Meston explained that she held this view because she was a Christian and knew women who had undergone abortions and regretted the decision.

A student replied that she knew women who had abortions without regretting them, to which Ms Meston responded: “Fair enough."

She was dismissed for “sharing personal opinions on political issues with pupils”.
The school’s headteacher said there was a “real concern” that Ms Meston would continue to “cause harm or distress to pupils”.

During her time at the school, a group of students repeatedly asked for her views on Nigel Farage and Donald Trump, to which she responded briefly that they were both popular politicians before returning to the subject of the lesson.

One pupil also asked her whether she would be attending the Reform UK party conference in February last year, after she had encountered a student at a previous Reform event.

Ms Meston said she would be attending, but maintained that she did not force her views on students at any point.

The Teachers’ Standards, set by the Department for Education, state that teachers “should generally avoid sharing personal political views unless they are entirely confident it will not be seen as promoting that viewpoint”.

The guidance adds: “When political issues are taught, they must be presented in a balanced manner.”

There are strict rules on expressing your personal opinions in class, especially on issues as heated as abortion, Gaza etc

Political impartiality in schools - GOV.UK

It sounds like this class got out of hand - she was supposed to be covering Dresden. I've been a teacher and you just say that your opinion isn't relevant. You can discuss what people think for and against

I was asked if I believe in God because I didn't pray in assembly. It's not hard to say that I don't share my beliefs in class.

No teacher should be sharing their opinions on serious topics as its not a fair balance between a student and a teacher and kids are vulnerable and impressionable

Echobelly · 15/10/2026 18:27

That does sound very unreasonable on the face of it, but also it's hardly from an unbiased source; the Telegraph is very invested in portraying the British Education system as insanely 'woke'. Dig deeper on almost any 'teacher/professional fired for...' story and there's an element that's been omitted that paints things in a different light, in my experience. This could be the exception, but who knows?

With tin foil hat on, quite often these stories/resulting legal battles are promoted and/or funded by America Christian Nationalist type orgs with deep pockets who have a vested interest in stories about 'Persecuted Christians'

I strongly suspect the pupils knew they could trigger her.
One of them met her at a Reform conference so they knew her politics

A teacher is an adult and should be able to control herself and not rise to the bait of a child

cakeorwine · 15/10/2026 18:32

She's claiming discrimination for holding views as a Christian

That's irrelevant

The basic rule in teaching is you don't express your politiical opinions

Imagine she had said she didn't approve of taking the knee. Doesn't matter if she's a Christian.

You can have views but the classroom is not a place to express them

Shes trying to sue the school so will see how that goes

cakeorwine · 15/10/2026 18:33

She thought she'd bring up Israel and Gaza to engage the students rather than discuss the bombing of Dresden

Then she covered Israel, Gaza, Abortion - off the lesson plan much

OK, I will almost bet money that a US organisation will be backing her to make a legal claim, this is textbook 'Alliance Defending Freedom' . If they haven't approached her already, they probably will.

I know that website about ADF isn't bias-free exactly either, but I have seen and read plenty about them from various sources and it paints a pretty clear, and bad, picture.

Vintlet · 15/10/2026 18:36

We had a Maths teacher from a different culture and he was sacked for openly condemning homosexuality and accusing some of the boys of being gay. He was escorted off the premises. Rightly so

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 15/10/2026 18:42

"Her dismissal followed four incidents in which the school had raised concerns with Ms Meston about her behaviour breaching national guidance, and had given her additional training."

It would be interesting to know a bit more about those previous incidents.

Her case is indeed being supported by the ADF

I only came across her when I was on the Fox News site.

I bet an American teacher would be sacked for expressing their views outside of the classroom let alone inside

She's a French teacher. If you are covering history, you stick to the plan given. It's just an hour.

I wonder what she discussed in her French lessons or even when she was a Form tutor?

Well, quite.

She claims to have been profoundly shocked by the school's decision to sack her. This seems unlikely, given that concerns had been raised with her previously and she had been given additional training to help her understand what was acceptable.

Apparently the school had received complaints about her conduct from parents and pupils.

It seems likely to me that concerns had already been raised with her and she had probably received warnings. If she chose to ignore those warnings, that was her prerogative, but she'll have to deal with the consequences of having done so.

I wouldn’t want my children being taught by a Reformist who doesn’t believe women should have autonomy over their own bodies. If she can’t keep her views to herself, she’s in the wrong profession.

It's no problem having those views

It's a problem if you express those views in the classroom.

I have plenty of views but I bet I would have had a meeting without coffee if I mentioned my views on religion, God and the Royal Family. Even my views on football might not have gone down too well.

Teachers should be neutral yes but we also have to teach and reflect the British values.

Ah, that's telling. Like why should an American network give a toss about a teacher being fired in the UK? That sounds very like she is getting US funding to make a case then. They love this stuff.

Echobelly · 15/10/2026 19:34

And ohhhhh looky here, wouldn't you know, she's on the ADF website! I presume this is her?

The thing is, you likely have absolutely no idea what the political and personal views are of the teachers your child may have been taught by.

mamaof4losingmymind · 15/10/2026 19:54

Soontobe60 · 15/10/2026 19:50

No they should say my personal views are private and get back to the lesson

ItWasGreatWhenItAllBegan · 15/10/2026 19:58

I absolutely agree teachers should keep their views private but left leaning teachers never do. Their thoughts on Trump, environmental issues, Gaza, etc always come through.

Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
