Were you an emo/goth/geek/mean girl at school?

14yo DD is into Billy Eilish and other miserable music, but was mystified when I described her as an emo. She knows what goths and means girls are though. I was trying to remember which tribe I was in as a teenager. Probably a bit geeky.

What was your tribe?

Emo can mean many things depending on what generation you are!

Goth

Hatty65 · Yesterday 19:55

Punk. (Although not really in school because we had a strict uniform)

I'm old.

No. I wasn't. I was quite and very hard working - no tribe really. Got high grades and was bullied because of that. Bullies stopped laughing then I went to Oxford.

Quite a lot of goth and mean girls around my age group.

Goth/greebo. Bet she doesn't know that word!

Openmouthinsertfood · Yesterday 20:02

I was into heavy metal. Dressed in a lot of black but not goth or emo.

wheredidtheteago · Yesterday 20:02

Emo/scene kid 😁

2manyEnergyDrinks · Yesterday 20:05

Townie/ mean girls adjacent. My close friends were the mean girls, and also the indie/emo girls and I floated between the two groups doing my own thing.

GintyMcGinty · Yesterday 20:07

I’ve never heard of emo before

I was kind of Indie - paisley pattern, black, doc martins, German army coat.

Nofeckingway · Yesterday 20:08

I was a teenage dirtbag . Baby 🍼

I was geek/emo, loved my games and art, emo side was heavy mental/my chemical romance not in a miserable way just enjoying the emo fashion and music. I'm still the same at the age of 36 just a bit brighter in colours 😂.

BigBadPotato · Yesterday 20:13

Mm… emo lite, is my best guess 😂 I was generally part of a big group of friends, all on the spectrum of emo/scene but I was also fairly ‘in’ with the group who would play cascada and dj cammy on their Sony Ericsson phones in the park with a fag and a bottle of lambrini… as well as being very horsey and part of the horse girl posho contingent… what a multi faceted girl I was 😅

I was just coming to say, I was a grebo and I bet she's never heard of one of those!

(Are you from the west mids then?)

BigBadPotato · Yesterday 20:17

I now need to know what a greebo is 😂

NovaF · Yesterday 20:18

Goth, but indie and metal adjacent. Wait, mean girls are a tribe now?!

London but we loved the greebo Midlands bands. Pop Will Eat Itself and the Wonderstuff. Ned's Atomic Dustbin. <sigh>

Bizarrely there's a wiki page! Grubby, pierced, deadlocks or long hair, rock meets dance.

OctoberUsername · Yesterday 20:23

I was the bullied loser with my group of other bullied losers. They are all doing amazing things now and we are still ‘besties’ to this day.

MrsTerryPratchett · Yesterday 20:23

Keeps autocucumbering grebo. Possibly because of my username LOL.

That's what I was thinking!

What's interesting though, is that although I never thought of the mean girls as a tribe as such, I do know that all the mean girls were pretty much in the same tribe. The glamorous ones who all aspired to look like WAGs with permatans and fake nails and brand labelled clothes, the flashier and more expensive the better. And always into urban, R&B and pop music, nightclubs etc. Not indie bands, not that art studenty vibe, not vintage clothes or the goth or emo scene. The mean girls were never into any of that.

Heavy metal in the late 80's, Indie in the 90's. I had a lot of raver friends though

I wore a lot of black eyeliner, short skirts with black tights, chunky socks and Kickers. It was such a good look.

My mum referred to that and other tights-and-big-shoes as golf club. Skinny wee things with giant boots. We were so awesome!

Indeed, we were. I also loved a boot cut jean and block heeled boot. Vest top with an open checked shirt (top pocket for fag packet).
