Are you polite to AI when it's helping you with a task?

I can't help it. I'm doing some work on a complex task and the AI bot has been incredibly useful in doing tasks for me that I wasn't sure how to do or would take too long and be repetitive manually

It reminds me of when you use Online Chat for websites. I usually say thanks or am polite on those

It's the same for AI even though it's just software

Many people are polite and we like that. There are some very nice people but some are rather blunt and there are a few that are downright rude - but then I suppose they are only human.

The fact that it’s an analogy and applies to more than AI does not alter the fact that it is a word associated with fun and playfulness.

So is it your expectation that all AI developers who have used the word Sandbox for decades to use a completely different word for Sandbox when they test AI?

And this new word will mean exactly the same as Sandbox?

As a rule, I hate AI and don’t use it. But I got stuck using it for an online task the other day because I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the AI assistant.

I started to get frustrated with it because it wasn’t doing what I asked. “Turn that background on the presentation purple” and it was making it pink. I was getting quite short with it and telling it that it was doing a bad job.

It then stopped speaking to me in English and would only reply in Spanish. 😂 Fortunately, I happen to understand Spanish so I just continued to respond in English and it would talk back to me in Spanish.

I think it got fed up with me and either did it to annoy me (which backfired because I thought it was hilarious!), or I had this vision of the English speaking AI assistant being like I’m done with this one! And the Spanish one having to take over when the first one flounced after I criticised their colour choice. 🤣

Nope. I’ve made it clear that I think we should continue to use the word sandbox but that does not preclude us acknowledging that it generates a wholesome feeling which helps give the impression AI is harmless. Just something to be aware of.

Highlighta · 12/10/2026 13:38

I am always polite, as I am just a polite person anyway.

I am not going to change how I am just because it's AI.

But like a pp, I had also give my AI a persona. Then last week I used the voice option for the first time, and an American man spoke back to me... 😝 My first thought listening was that meme with the little girl in the car seat giving the side eye.

Netcurtainnelly · 12/10/2026 13:53

No I tell them off when they get it wrong. 😆

Again!

The same can apply for so many other words in the English language, context is important! And the context in relation to AI is IT, and its associated language.

So Chat GPT appreciated my feedback

So you imagine AI playing in the Sandbox having fun in a safe place ?

It's not going to change but I am impressed by your persistence

No. I tell it to fuck off when it turns up unwanted.

Andsoitbeganagain · 12/10/2026 20:05

I don't use AI because I don't think it's a good thing for so many reasons but by God it has improved the creativity of the complaint letters that come across my desk these days. I'm not sure they are meant to make me laugh out loud but I do love the added drama.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 12/10/2026 20:28

I do, but I shouldn't because it has to analyse each word and all the 'pleases' and 'thank yous' add up and cost the companies a fortune/ require extra processing power.

Edited as I see the poster below saying the same thing... with a link!!

Miffsmumandslave · 12/10/2026 21:31

I am always very polite when typing to AI but Siri pops up unasked on my phone when I’m doing other stuff and gets on my wick. It did it the other day and I said “oh just f@*k off Siri”and it flounced off, saying it doesn’t appreciate that sort of language (or something like that) and turned itself off.
I have had low grade anxiety ever since, that if Siri has a say, I’m for it when the SHTF.

But if people are just listening to AI being discussed on the news and it is described as being in a sandbox that makes AI sound kinda cuddly and approachable. That’s a fact.

Do you really believe that if people hear AI is in a sandbox, they think it's having fun, being cute and cuddly?

Well, with that fact they deserve to be the first to go when AI goes rogue and the machine genocide begins 🤣🤣🤣

Recently when off to meet my Dsis at Heathrow I messaged the Meta WhatsApp thing by mistake - in a hurry and her name is short and also starting with M.

She’d told me not to bother coming to meet her, but since she’d been travelling for 23 hours by then, I messaged, ‘I’m coming!’ while trying to find a parking space.

it replied, ‘How exciting! Can I help you with planning anything?’ or words to that effect.
I replied, ‘Go away!!’
And it came back with, ‘All right, I’m going,’ or words TTE. 😂
